The "Subway" opened on November 20, 1909.
Scope and Content
Black and white photo of the Michigan Central Railway Ross Street subway/underpass looking south. The YMCA building on the southeast corner of Talbot and Ross Streets is partially visible. A steam locomotive is partially visible approaching the railway overpass from the west (right). The Elgin Co-Operative Services water tower on Moore Street is partially visible at right. A sign for the Supertest Service Station on the southeast corner of Ross and Jonas Streets is visible in the far background. The subway was constructed by the MCR in 1908 and demolished in May, 2014.

"Spohn's Flats Sold - This scenic 40-50 acre tract of land has been acquired by Mayor Vincent A. Barrie. Mayor Barrie is offering the property to any enterprising civic organization who wish to develop it and utilize if for the benefit of residents of the surrounding district. Mr. Barrie said it is also available to the city for parks use if they so desire. The view above is from Stanley Street, opposite Gladstone Avenue facing west." (1a)
There are two copies of this photograph. Republished July 22, 1969 with caption: "Potential St. Thomas Park - Former St. Thomas mayor Vincent A. Barrie has offered to donate his 42-acre section of Spohn's Flats to the City of St. Thomas, to be used for a park and recreation area. Council approved the plan to principle at last night's meeting. the above picture shows the area in question." (1b).
Part of the property shown was donated to the City of St. Thomas and developed as Vincent A. Barrie Park.

History / Biographical
The Michigan Central Railroad (reporting mark MC) was originally incorporated in 1846 to establish rail service between Detroit, Michigan and St. Joseph, Michigan. The railroad later operated in the states of Michigan, Indiana, and Illinois in the United States, and the province of Ontario in Canada. After about 1867 the railroad was controlled by the New York Central Railroad, which later became part of Penn Central and then Conrail. After the 1998 Conrail breakup Norfolk Southern now owns much of the former Michigan Central trackage.
Scope and Content
Fonds consists of various records created and maintained by the Michigan Central Railway. Fonds includes:
Record of locomotives through St. Thomas shops for classified and unclassified repairs, with history of individual rail motor cars, 1936-1959 (R6 S1 Sh3 B7)
Locomotives repair/ maintenance logbook, with index, 1902-1936 (also contains a colour depiction of a standard type Grant locomotive, 1873 and a certificate dated November 13, 1962 attesting that R.G. Ray is a life member of Charity Lodge No. 5, B. of L.F. and E. (Brotherhood of Locomotive Firemen and Enginemen) (R6 S1 Sh3 B7)
