History / Biographical
Donald Hume Anderson (1910-2004) was a prominent business man in St. Thomas, Ontario, directing the operation of the family business known as the Anderson Department Store from 1932 until his retirement in 1967. Mr. Anderson was also a passionate supporter of the arts, and assembled one of south western Ontario's largest private collections of art, books, local history records, maps, furniture and other artifacts. He was particularly interested in cartography and local history and thus collected books and documents concerned with the history and prominent citizens of St. Thomas and Elgin County as well as early survey maps of Elgin County communities and the concession roads linking its villages and towns. Much of Mr. Anderson's collection was sold at auction following his death in February 2004, but many items were donated to the St. Thomas-Elgin Public Arts Centre where they remain on display.
Custodial History
The records comprising the fonds were originally in the custody of the Anderson family, and were transferred to the Elgin County Archives in 2004.
Scope and Content
Fonds consists of selected items from Donald Hume Anderson's private collection including photographs; an early survey map and surveyor's report; books of poetry; ledgers maintained by temperance societies in Vienna, Ontario and other Elgin County communities, including The Sons of Temperance and the Masonic Lodge; and bailiff's ledgers from the 1st Division Court, Vienna, Ontario. Fonds will be of particular interest to researchers studying the Pre-Confederation history of Elgin County, particularly the emergence of the Temperance Movement, the development of transportation systems and urban/rural planning, and the administration of justice at village and town courthouses.

Digitized copy of a plan of the Town of Chatham, County of Kent, dated July 8, 1799 by Mr. A. Iredell. Lot and concession numbers are listed, as are settler names. Many have been written in at a later date, showing how these maps were used far beyond the date of creation, as they were constantly being updated. Some lots are marked with ‘R’, ‘E’, or (in later annotations), ‘D’. Settlers’ names have been replaced with later additions in darker ink in some cases as well, or land that belonged to settlers was later transferred to the clergy. The boundary with Harwich is noted on the bottom, as well as a note regarding how this map was originally part of a larger map, alongside a map of Dover, Harwich, Howard, Camden, and Raleigh.
