Scope and Content
Post Office building, St. Thomas, ca. 1875, located on the south side of Talbot Street, just west of Elgin Street (about where the contemporary block at 334-350 Talbot Street is). This was the fifth post office building in St. Thomas. It was constructed in 1871 or 1874 by builder J.M. Green and likely paid for by the Ermatinger family (Frank Ermatinger was post master at the time and was the only post master to serve at this location). This building served as the post office until 1883, when a new building was erected on the northwest corner of Mary and Talbot Streets. The building was later the location of the W.K. Cameron law office (from ca. 1920); W. Scott McKay also located his law practice here for many years, beginning ca. 1930. The building immediately to the west of the post office in this photograph was the home of the builder J.M. Green and was constructed in 1874. This house was moved, ca. 1882-1883, to make way for the Grand Central Hotel. The house was moved to 73 Metcalfe Street and is still standing.

Scope and Content
Post Office building, St. Thomas, ca. 1910, located on the northwest corner of Mary and Talbot Streets. This was the sixth location of the post office in St. Thomas. The building was constructed and opened in 1883, on the site formerly occupied by the original Knox Presbyterian Church building, which was on this site 1865-1882 and was demolished to make way for the post office. The Knox Presbyterian Church manse (minister's residence) can be seen in this photograph to the rear of the post office, north on Mary Street. The manse later served as the residence of a Wabash Railroad engineer; it was demolished ca. 1927-1928 to make way for the new YWCA building constructed on the southwest corner of Mary and Curtis Streets. The post office building was constructed using Credit Valley sandstone, which had a distinctive pinkish colour. When the post office building was demolished in 1957, some of the stone was acquired and used to extend the spires on St. Peter's Catholic Cathedral in London, Ontario. The operations of the post office occupied the first (ground) floor of this building, while the second floor housed the Customs office. The third floor was the post office caretaker's residence; at the time this photograph was taken, the caretaker was Gilbert Luton. At some time before 1935, the front doorway shown here was blocked and two new doorways were built on either side of the former entrance. Note the gas lamps on either side of the front steps; the fire hydrant in the foregound; and the relatively small size of the trees along the Mary Street side of the building, indicating the photograph was taken within about ten years of the building's construction. The one-storey building shown in this photograph immediately to the rear (north) of the post office on Mary Street was the office and residence of Dr. Arthur F. Tufford (16 Mary Street). The three-storey building partially visible to the west of the post office on Talbot Street was known as the Times Building, and continued to serve as the base of operations of the St. Thomas Times-Journal following the amalgamation of the St. Thomas Daily Times and St. Thomas Evening Journal in 1918 until the Times-Journal moved to its current location on Hincks Street in 1952. The Times Building was demolished in 1958 along with the post office. For many years the Times-Journal caretaker lived on the third floor of the building.

Original Southwick Street Fire Hall and Fire Brigade, St. Thomas, ca. 1890. A rare image showing the original tower top. The hall, located on the west side of Southwick Street, mid-way between Talbot and Centre Streets, was opened in 1882 and demolished in 1974. The tower was used for suspending and drying hoses, not as an observatory for spotting fires. Horse-drawn fire wagons as shown here remained in use until ca. 1925.
