Physical Description
1 photograph : b&w ; 7 x 11.5 cm
History / Biographical
In the early years if settlement, school was held in various private homes, with Angus Campbell of Port Talbot as teacher. About the same time there was a school on Lot 16, Talbot Rd. taught by a Mr. Thomas McColl. These schools were replaced by a 17' by 20' log structure on Lot 14, Concession 13 which had only one door and one window. Around the year 1858 a new white frame school was built on land bought from Mr. W. Mowberry on the northeast corner of the intersection in Eagle. By the 1880's attendance had significantly increased so a harness shop owned by Mr. Frederick Lindermare was purchased and moved to the school site for use as a second classroom. The entire structure was destroyed by fire in 1984. The school built to replace it was made of brick and cost $1,943. This school was used up until 1955 when it was renovated for use as a community hall. A two-room, one-storey, yellow brick building was erected in 1955 and used up until the consolidation of the school sections in June, 1965.
Information taken from "Elgin County Schools", written by Jim Doelman and published in 1982.
Scope and Content
A pick up truck branded with "Whynot Gardens: H. Swain & Sons, West Lorne" and decorated with a sign that says "Eagle SS #4" and the union jack with ribbons, possibly for a parade. There are unidentified individuals sitting and standing in the back of the truck. Aldborough School Section No.4 (Eagle) is visible in the background.
