Ira Allen White (1796-1887) was born in Scipio, County of Orin, New York State, son of Ebenezer White and Susanna Franklin. Following his service during the War of 1812 he learned to be a millwright and eventually came to Upper Canada with the supplies and machinery needed to build a grist mill in Galt at the request of Mr. Slade.
In 1822 he married Elizabeth Reesor in Markham township and they had six sons and four daughters. Only four sons and one daughter survived infancy: Truman, Anthony, Benjamin, Albert and Harriet.
Following the death of his wife Elizabeth in 1852, he married Jane Lacup in 1853. In 1854, Ira, Jane, Anthony and Albert relocated to Elgin County on the Malahide-Yarmouth townline on a bushlot. They brought with them the "burr" stones for use in a grist mill. This property had an old saw mill and was refurbished by the Whites. Anthony was injured at the mill in September 1854 and died as a result of his injuries.
Albert continued to work the mill trade with his fatehr. In 1867-1868 they built a five story grist mill and by 1870, had four mills: 2 saw and 2 grist, with one of each on the small pond and two of each on the Springwater pond.
Ira died in 1887 and was buried with his first wife Elizabeth and their children in Cedar Grove, Markham township.
