History / Biographical
The first school in the Eden area was built before 1851 when the village of Eden had not yet developed. This log school was about a mile and a half south of the present location of Eden on the south half of Lot 21, Concession 8. Later on, a frame structure was built on the same site. The first school in the village of Eden was built in 1876. This school had two storeys and was made of white brick. The old frame school was used as a community hall, then as a girl scout hall and finally Emery Harvey acquired it and used it as a barn. The upstairs room in the Eden school was not used until 1899, when a continuation school was begun. The continuation school operated until 1943, at which time arrangements were made for busing high school students to Aylmer. S.S. #18 was closed in 1951 after having been used for Grade Five and Six classes from Straffordville for one year. After the school was closed, the board retained ownership and allowed the school to be used as a community centre.
By 1960, it had become necessary to either expand Straffordville or build a new school in the area. On October 4, 1960, the board decided to tear down the old school in Eden and build a new three-room structure on the same site. Plans were drawn up by Mr. C.G. Gillin of London and on June 2, 1961, a contract was signed by the board and Wm. Hendriks for the construction of the school. The new Eden school was officially opened on December 15, 1961. As of 1982, Straffordville-Eden Public School was being run under one administration and was serving all of north Bayham Township.
Information taken from Elgin County Schools, written by Jim Doelman and published in 1982.
