Scope and Content
One black and white photograph used in St. Thomas Times-Journal article published April 6, 1971, with caption:
"Making preparations - Casino Royale, a major undertaking of the Women's Committee of the Art Gallery (of St. Thomas-Elgin), kept the members busy for several weeks prior to its most successful presentation on March 12. These huge dice, constructed of large cardboard cartons, were used as mobiles at the entrance to the auditorium of the St. Thomas-Elgin Memorial Community Centre. Looking over their handiwork are (seated, left to right) Mrs. Ernest (Anne) Bridge, project committee chairman and convener of Casino Royale; Mrs. R.O. (Lois) Farley, a member of the decorating committee; standing, Mrs. Jack (Sandra) McDonald, vice-president of the women's committee, and Mrs. Jack (Ruth) Richardson, co-convener of the event." Photograph is from the St. Thomas Times-Journal fonds.(4a)
"Important instruction - Turning a cartwheel or tumbling across a mat is important when one is only eight and anxious to learn gymnastic skills. The YWCA on Mary Street is a mecca for many youngsters after four and on Saturday mornings and they are guided in perfecting their technique by teen-age counsellors from the city schools. Debbie Udell, 16, a Grade X pupil at Arthur Voaden Secondary School, gives pointers to Sheila McCann, 8, as Sheri Murray, 15, of Grade VIII at Locke's School, looks on." (4b)
"Original members - When the Payne's Mills Women's Institute was formed 25 years ago, this group of women joined and they have been members ever since. This picture was taken on the night the 25th anniversary of the branch was celebrated. Seated, from left to right, are Mrs. Albert Auckland, Mrs. William Meek, Mrs. Morley Adams, Mrs. Gordon Lyle; standing, Mrs. Vermont Pow, Mrs. Thomas Blackman, Mrs. Ross Berdan and Mrs. Ken Bawden." (4c)
"Obesity is the topic - At a recent meeting of the TOPS Club of St. Thomas, Dr. Michael Donal, a psychiatrist at the St. Thomas Psychiatric Hospital, gave an addres on obesity and its physical and mental [e]ffect on a person. Here, Dr. Dolan and Mrs. Lee Candler, president of the TOPS Club, discuss a pertinent point." (4d)
"The proof of the pudding - It is generally in the eating, and the painstaking preparations which go on beforehand ensure its goodness. When First United Church held its Holly Fare last Winter, Christmas puddings sold like the proverbial hot cakes. Shown stirring and mixing the ingredients are, left to right, Mrs. J.A. Robilliard, Mrs. J.C. Fyle, Mrs. D.G. Malott, Mrs. T.C. West and Mrs. G.F. Butterwick." (4e)
"The way it's done - Refinishing furniture was the topic of an interesting demonstration given at Knox Presbyterian Church, Fingal, when the Women's League and Women's Missionary Society held an interesting day of activity. Shown, left to right, are Mrs. Sadie Burgess, Mrs. Clayton Webster and Mrs. Lawrence Kruppe, all of Knox Church, Fingal, and Mrs. Duncan Turner, R.R. 4, Iona Station, and Mrs. Archie McKillop, R.R. 1, Southwold, who demonstrated the way chairs may be refinished." (4f)
"Lodge honored - Pearl Rebekah Lodge No. 186, Port Stanley, which has been instituted since 1918, had the honor of having Mrs. Louis Grayling chosen as the district deputy of West St. Thomas Distric No. 18. Mrs. Grayling is pictured with her installing team. From left to right, seated, are Mrs. W. Darlington, vice grand; Mrs. Ken Litt; Mrs. Grayling; Mrs. Robert Cooper, deputy marshal; Mrs. William Stormes, noble grand; standing, Mrs. M. Campbell; Mrs. M. Stormes; Mrs. Edna Gale; Mrs. A. Forsyth; Mrs. William Wright; Mrs. Lawrence Ross; Mrs. M. Weir; Mrs. H. Sprague; Mrs. A. Jones; Mrs. Earl Ward." (4g)
"A common bond - Anything to do with homemaking interests women on every nation and so it was that this group, from widely separated countries, watched intently as Mrs. William Smith of Elmdale Flowers arranged colorful blooms in an attractive way. The demonstration was part of the entertainment arranged by the Hi Neighbor hostess, Mrs. A.A. McCormick, for a recent coffee party held in the YWCA. From left to right are Mrs. Smith; Mrs. McCormick; Miss Susan Smith, who comes from England; Mrs. Neelam Jaitly, whose home was in India; and Mrs. M. Nymeyer, a native of Holland." (4h)
One black and white photograph of Mrs. M.L. Bayliss celebrating her 90th birthday used in St. Thomas Times-Journal article published February 24, 1972. (4i)
One black and white photograph of an unidentified girl with a tapped maple tree used in St. Thomas Times-Journal article published ca. 1970s. (4j)
One black and white photograph of Mrs. H.R. Rokeby-Thomas used in St. Thomas Times-Journal article published ca. 1970s. (4k)
