Scope and Content
Hopkins Casino dance hall, Port Stanley, ca. 1925. Constructed in 1909 and officially opened on July 1, 1909 under its original name, the Stanley Beach Casino. Later purchased by St. Thomas photographer James H. Hopkins and renamed. Prior to the construction of the London & Port Stanley Railway Dance Pavilion (later known as the Stork Club) in 1926, the Casino was the largest summer dance hall in Canada. When Hopkins Casino was destroyed by fire in April, 1932, it is said that the flames could be seen from across Lake Erie in Cleveland, Ohio. The Orion Hotel is visible in the background: the two-story porch has been removed, but the building still stands on the west side of William Street, Port Stanley, opposite Lotis Lane and has been in use recently as a residential outpatient clinic for patients of the St. Thomas Psychiatric Hospital. History / Biographical
No. 1 TTS was established on the grounds of the St. Thomas Psychiatric Hospital. Ontario Heritage Foundation historic plaque text: "RCAF Technical Training School - The only facility of its kind in Ontario during the Second World War, No. 1 Technical Training School, St. Thomas, was established by the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1939 to produce skilled ground crews for active wartime service. It was housed here in this hospital complex and was operated in compliance with Canada's commitment to establish air training facilities in sites removed from the theatre of war. Equipped to handle more than 2000 students at a time, the school offered six month courses for aircraft electricians and aero-engine, airframe and instrument mechanics in addition to specialized training for fabric and sheet metal workers. When the war ended in 1945 the school was closed and the complex was returned to the Ontario Department of Health."
