Photographs of members of the St. Thomas Lions Club preparing Christmas baskets for various families in need in St. Thomas. Caption from St. Thomas Times-Journal: "Deserving Families Are Being Remembered: At least 22 deserving families in St. Thomas will have a Merry Christmas that otherwise might have been denied them had it not been for the Lions Club of St. Thomas. The club, through its welfare department, is providing each family with a basket full of good things, as can be seen from the accompanying photograph, taken while things were being assembled. In some family, the illness of a breadwinner has caused hardship. In others, some other reason might have denied them the full joy that should be theirs on Christmas. Some of the baskets, which are seen being prepared Monday evening under the direction of the Lions Welfare Chairman, George Rankin, will be on their way on Tuesday. The rest will follow later. Seen at work here are (left to right) George Rankin, committee chairman and past president; Art Galloway, vice-president; Dr. E. L. Brown, president; Dave Doan, immediate past president, and Joe Baron."

Caption from St. Thomas Times-Journal: "Lions Distribute Baskets to Deserving." 1_4192: "The "Lions' Share" of good things destined for some deserving families in the community this Christmas was made available through the kindness of the Lions Club of St. Thomas, which provided 46 baskets and cartons of groceries, meats, fruit and sweet things. Here members of the club's health and welfare committee, which was in charge of the project, give some of the first parcels to go out on Wednesday a send-off. Left to right they are Frank Kondal, third vice-president; Morris Housley, past president; Dr. E. L. Brown, chairman of the health and welfare committee; Frank Coughlin and Arthur Galloway, the club president. Names of families who recieved the treats were provided by different welfare agencies in the city, and a close check was made to see that there would be no overlapping or that anyone would be missed."

Photographs of members of the Lions Club preparing Christmas baskets. Caption from St. Thomas Times-Journal on December 21, 1950, page one: “Prepare Christmas Baskets for Deserving Families.” 1_1296: “Children’s clothing and toys are this year being placed in the food baskets which the St. Thomas Lions Club will be distributing to deserving families in the community on Saturday afternoon in time to bring a measure of Christmas cheer. In this photograph officials of the Lions Club and the Lady Lions who assisted in the project, crowd around some of the baskets that have been completed, and check them off against their list. The list included up to 40 family groups which will benefit. Pictured here (left to right) are Art Wilson, of Wilson and Somerville, which is the depot from which all baskets will be distributed; Mrs. Florence Baron and Mrs. Jean Steven, joint heads of the Lady Lions welfare committee; and George Rankin, chairman of the Lions Club health and welfare committee. Mr. Rankin explained that the addition of toys and children’s clothing to the baskets this year replaced the children’s part usually held by the club at this season.”

Photographs of the St. Thomas Lions Club's Christmas party. Caption from St. Thomas Times-Journal: "Lions Stage Fine Children's Party: Nearly 100 Enjoy Program, Santa Claus, Saturday." 1_326: "The Met Santa at Lions Club Party: Santa Claus came to town on Saturday afternoon and he is seen here chatting with a few of about 100 children from the city who were invited by the Lions Club to come and meet him at a club-sponsored party in the dining room of the Home Dairy. And that he is still a popular old chap with the younger generation may be seen in the expressions on the faces of those in the photograph. Some of the children were too small to come alone, and were brought along by adults - a few of whom can be seen in the picture. But the party itself was planned and carried through for the children, and great credit is due to Chairman George Rankin, of the Lions Club, his committee, and other club members, who turned in with a will and made the affair such a grand success."

Scope and Content
Photographs of Jim Branch being stopped on his bicycle on Flora Street, St. Thomas, by Tom Wynne and Constable Ed Luft, members of the Lions Club and police department traffic safety campaign. Caption from St. Thomas Times-Journal: "Who'll Be The Next To Be Stopped?" 1_4128: "First cyclist to be tagged by a safety patrol of the Lions Club and police department traffic safety campaign for his good handling of a wheel, Jim Branch, aged 18, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Branch, 121 Alma street, is seen here on Flora street, near Talbot, a short distance from the Vocational School, where he is a grade 12 student. He was stopped by Tom Wynne (right), chairman of the Lions Club Safety Committee, and Constable Ed Luft (left), the police department's official representative with the group that planned "Traffic Safety Week." A former Times-Journal newsboy, the youth was stopped in an unofficial trial run of a car that starts Saturday to make a daily selection of the best bicycle rider and best motor vehicle driver on city streets during the next week. Each of those picked will receive one of the prizes displayed in Palmer's Cycle Shop, 650 Talbot street. Young Branch, the only boy in a family of four children, has also been promised an award for his conduct. He was taken completely by surprise."
