Scope and Content
Photographs of St. Thomas firemen create headgear for use in the Labor Day parade. Caption from St. Thomas Times-Journal: "Firemen "Make Faces" for the Labor Day Parade Here: This isn't a section of a Walt Disney studio but a corner of the attic of the St. Thomas fire hall on Southwick street, where members of Local 447 of the International Federation of Firefighters have been busy since the first of June preparing for the two big parades that will be held Labor Day under the auspices of the Local Trades and Labor Council. This remarkable example of initiative in the manufacture of original headgear began when Chairman George Lang and his committee in charge of parades learned that renting ornamental heads made professionally would cost from $3 to $10 apiece. The committee thought it could do better. Mr. Lang and some of his railroad associates shaped some heads from metal, but the big results were obtained when the firefighters, guided by Fireman Bill Turvey, began to experiment with chickenwire, paper, paste and paint. The chickenwire formed the basic shape for each head. Newspaper wrapped around it, and pasted on it layers or in lumps, gave the ehad the ultimate shape desired, such as Mickey Mouse, Porky Pig, Popeye and many other characters taken largely from the comics. The results of their efforts, shown above, have drawn favorable comment from commercial artists, Trades and Labor officials and those among the public generally who have seen the more than 20 masks that have been created. In the above photograph, the artist of the project, and leading promoter, Fireman Bill Turvey, pauses as he puts the finishing touches on Freddy Fox, to laugh at a bulldog policeman of his own creation which is mounted on Fireman Fred Morley. To date about 25 caricatures have been made at the fire hall, with most of the men lending a willing hand. In addition to artist Bill Turvey, perhaps greatest credit is due to Fireman Tom Gagen, Les Davies and Walt Byway. These men have estimated that the cost of the project hasn't gone much over $15."

Scope and Content
Photographs of a fire fighting demonstration at the Grand Central Hotel on Talbot Street, St. Thomas. Images show firemen, fire trucks, and people being rescued from the hotel using ladders and chutes. Caption from St. Thomas Times-Journal: "Spectacular Demonstration of 75-Foot Aerial Ladder Truck, Life-Saving Shutes: "Shooting the Chutes" in Demonstration." 2_2501: "Demonstrations of the Eastman Evacuators, said to be the most modern device for getting trapped people out of burning buildings, were given on Talbot street, at the Grand Central Hotel, Tuesday afternoon, atrracting many spectators. The above picture shows two types of chutes in use, one being the favored type that is attachable to aerial ladder trucks like the new one installed in the St. Thomas Fire Department, and the other for use with ground ladders, to be attached to windows of buildings. The latter type was used from a third-storey window of the hotel, duplicating the situation that arose two years ago when the hotel was partially destroyed by fire and a couple had to be rescued from the fourth floor." 2_2492: "The oldest person to try out the Eastman life-saving chute, when demonstrations were given was Alfred G. Grogan, 79-year-old First World War ceteran, living in Pearl street, city. There was a wide Irish smile on Mr. Grogan's face and he was waving his hands in acknowledgement of the applause of less courageous spectators as he stepped out of the canvas chute, after a 60-foot slide from fourth storey of the building."
