Caption from St. Thomas Times-Journal on June 24, 1950, page ten: “For Small Merchants and Other Business Men.” 2_3957: “The first cheque under the new group insurance plans for the small merchants and other business men of the city, as sponsored by the St. Thomas Chamber of Commerce, was turned over to High Broardfoot, representing the insuring company, Thursday, by O.E. Jennings, president of the Chamber. Shown in the above photograph, left to right are: Mr. Broadfoot; Mr. Jennings, seated at the desk; and Mrs. Dorothy M. Godkin, secretary for the Chamber. The service was started for businessmen of the city with insufficient employees to operate group insurance plans for their, own, as in done in many of larger businesses and industries. The popularity of this service with the smaller businessmen is indicated in the report from R. W. Richardson, chairman of the Chamber of Commerce, that more than 60 per cent are already taking advantage of it. The collections are made by the Chamber of Commence from the business firms and in turn are turned over to Mr. Broadfoot, as representative of the insuring company.”
