Photographs of wheat fields on the farm of John A. Armstrong and Sons on Lake Road, Yarmouth as well as on the Ontario Hospital farm. Captions from St. Thomas Times-Journal: "Harvesting Scenes on Elgin Farms; Hospital in Agricultural Setting." 1_2874: "The eight million dollar Ontario Mental Hospital two miles south of St. Thomas, as seen in an agricultural setting. About twenty acres of the hospital grounds along the south side was planted to winter wheat last fall. The wheat had just been cut and chocked when the above photograph was taken from a point off the Port Stanley Highway, near the place where the residence of the late James Todd stood for so many years, before the area was acquired for hospital purposes. The stately elms and other trees that stand in this section of the grounds were planted by Mr. Todd." 1_2877: "A scene on the farm of John A. Armstrong and Sons, Lake Road, Yarmouth, one mile from Dexter and four miles from Port Stanley, where a ten-acre field of outstanding winter wheat was being cut when The Times-Journal photographer visited it the other day. The wheat was being cut when The Times-Journal photographer visited it the other day. The wheat is the new variety known as Cornell 595, introduced a few years ago as a rust and smut proof grain. The seed was obtained through Elgin Co-Operative Services last fall and was grown by William Roberts, Sparta, who introduced the new variety to Elgin. Both Mr. Roberts and Mr. Armstrong are members of the Yarmouth Township Council. There are ten acres of Cornell 595 in this field. It is being harvested and cleaned for seed purposes. In the picture, Alan Armstrong, 17, youngest of Mr. and Mrs. Armstrong's three sons, is riding the tractor while Mr. Armstrong is in charge of the binder. The Armstrongs favor this method of harvesting wheat to use of the more modern combine, which leaves the straw in the field." 1_2881: "Leslie and George Armstrong, sons of Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Armstrong, Lake Road, Yarmouth, were literally in the thick of the wheat sheaves when the above photograph was taken. George, second oldest son, is in the forefront; Leslie, the oldest son, is in the rear. The grain is a ten-acre field of the new variety, Cornell 595, and is rated one of the best of this variety in the district. The Armstrong boys represent the fourth generation on this farm. William Armstrong was the first to settle along the picturesque Lake Road, some 103 years ago. His brother also acquired land, and together the Armstrong brothers owned and farmed 400 acres of productive soil. The farm on which this seed wheat was grown was recently acquired by J. A. Armstrong and his son, Leslie. With the exception of seven years, the land has been in the family since 1845. Both this farm and the home farm which adjoins it to the west, are still heavily wooded."

Photographs of the ruins of the Ontario Hosptial Farm after a devastating fire. Caption from St. Thomas Times-Journal on August 21, 1950, page eight: “Hospital Farm Fire Leaves Scene of Utter Ruin.” 1_328 and 1_330: “There wasn’t much anymore could do to half the fire which destroyed the large barn and other buildings on the Ontario Hospital farm southeast of St. Thomas Sunday afternoon. The top picture, taken after the buildings were destroyed, shows only a few charred fence posts left standing, while the piles of grain, potatoes, straw, and hay are left smouldering. The scene is one of utter ruin. The bottom picture shows that happened to some of the machinery stored in the barn. In the foreground stands a tractor and a binder, with the rubber tiers burned of the tractor. At the rear left is the silo filling machine.”
