Photographs of Annie Gloin and Nurse Clarke at the Memorial Hospital Annex, Yarmouth Centre. Caption from St. Thomas Times-Journal: "Ninetieth Birthday Next Week." 1_1515: "Mrs. Annie Gloin, who has been a patient at the Memorial Hospital for nearly three years, with the exception of a few months, after breaking her hip in the fall, will observe her ninetieth birthday on Thursday of next week at the Memorial Hospital Annex, Yarmouth Centre, where she has been recently. Mrs. Gloin, who is a patient beloved by those with whom she has come in contact during her long stay in the hospital as well as by many other friends, is shown in the above photograph with Mrs. Clarence Clarke, Reg. N., supervisor at the Annex. Born in London, Ont., on April 1, 1858, Mrs. Gloin is the youngest daughter of the late William and Martha Harris. When a child, she moved to Edgeware Road to live with a sister, Mrs. Archie Michael, who died ten years ago. Her marriage to Emery Gloin, who passed away in 1923, took place nearly seventy years ago, on Christmas Day, 1878. Mr. and mrs. Gloin lived for two years at New Sarum before moving to Yarmouth Centre, where she resided until three years ago, when she had the misfortune to break her hip in a fall. Although she is the last surviving member of her family, Mrs. Gloin has five daughters and three sons: Mrs. George Durdle (Bertha), Locust street; Miss Eva Gloin, Talbot street; Mrs. George Johnson (Stella), Erie street; Mrs. William Freeman (Mabel), St. George street; Mrs. Norman Ballantyne (Gladys), Maple street; and Frank, William and Carol, of Yamouth Centre. Another son, Norman, died of wounds in the First World War. There are nineteen grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren in the happy family circle."

Scope and Content
Photographs of children and nurses in the St. Thomas Memorial Hospital. Captions from St. Thomas Times-Journal: "Youngsters at Hospital Are Expecting Santa Claus." "Santa's Christmas Eve travels don't come within visiting hours at the Memorial Hospital, but he won't be turned away when he comes to leave his packages for little ones in hospital for Christmas. The tree is ready for him, complete with tinsel and lights, and the youngsters are waiting for Christmas morning to see what Saint Nick will leave. The Times-Journal photographer found some of the children eagerly awaiting old Saint Nick; others hoped to greet Santa in their homes." 1_4193: "Rosemary Van Velzer, two-year-old daughter of Mrs. Pearl Van Velzer, R.R. 7, St. Thomas, in a very serious mood. Wistfully clutching her teddy bear, she refused to be interviewed and only shook her head to answer, "No" to all questions fired at her by the reporter." 1_4194: "Brenda Ann Wilcox is making the best of her first Christmas even if she is spending it in hospital. She was crying when the photographer called, but soon brightened up to give a big smile for the camera. Brenda's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Lorne Wilcox, live at R.R. 4, St. Thomas." 1_4195: "Nurses Margaret Blakeley (left) and Eileen Beer thought Dick Hunt might cheer up if they showed him the two babies who will be spending Christmas in the hospital with him. Dick's mother, Mrs. George Hunt tried without success to interest her six-year-old son in the many playthings on his bed. He wants to go home to 31 Manitoba street for December 25. The baby in Miss Blakeley's arms, looking brightly around at all the people, is Roxanna Hindley, three months, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Donald Hindley, Union. Mr. and Mrs. Orville Pavey, 145 Erie street, are parents of Miss Judith Pavey, three weeks." 1_4196: "Happy-go-lucky Mary Margaret Greene, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Greene, 69 East Pearl street, didn't care for the photographer taking her picture and she showed her disapproval by an outburst of tears that lasted just long enough for the camera to get in its work. The next minute she was all smiles again. Her only desire was to get back home for Christmas and this is being gratified today." 1_4198: "Peter McNicol had the biggest smile as he peeked from beneath the covers of his hospital bed. Santa Claus had just come to see him and whispered something others around didn't hear. Mr. and Mrs. Cameron McNicol, 87 Chestnut street, are Peter's parents."
