Photograph of a group of men and a woman standing in front of a plane on tarmac outside of Elgin Airways Ltd. Published in St. Thomas Times-Journal, October 15, 1951, page three. 1_3065: “From many parts of Western Ontario, flying enthusiasts came to the annual Breakfast Flight sponsored by Elgin Airways, Limited, Sunday morning. Hamilton had by far the largest representation at the Breakfast Flight, outside of the St. Thomas and District Flying Club, but Sarnia took credit for sending the most unique aircraft, one of the queer-shaped amphibian, ‘Sea Bees,’ with accommodations for four people. The plane, belonging to Faraway Aircraft of Sarnia, and piloted by Ray Conant, arrived shortly before ten o’clock, Sunday morning. Shown above, in front of the plane, on its arrival, left to right: James Maynes, manager of the airport at Yarmouth Centre; Alderman T.H. Currah, chairman of the airport committee of the City Council; H.B. Somerville, who headed the big goodwill flight from Hamilton; Peter Couse, a very active member of the local flying club; Lenora Sheppard, office manger for Elgin Airways and one of three young ladies who hope soon to have their pilots’ licenses; Ray Conant, Sarnia; and Don Allin, instructor at the airport for Elgin Airways. “There are 18 students now training under the Government-approved plan with another class to be organized. Some 20 students have already qualified as pilots. The two other young ladies in the class now training are Roma Cottrell and Joyce Burrell. The pilots who brought in planes from Hamilton in the Breakfast Flight were F.L. Carson, B. Parrack, B. and William Marsh, C. Griffin and H.B. Somerville. There were 14 air-minded visitors in all from Hamilton. Pilots who brought in craft from London were G. Warren and J. Demmery. F. Dickinson flew in from Chatham. Breakfasts were served in the remodeled clubroom which has been doubled in size and now provides a complete aviation wall map service for visiting pilots. The ‘winged’ visitors were welcomed in behalf of St. ThomaS by Ald. Currah and also by City Treasurer W.E. Rowe, who is also a member of the airport committee.”
