Photographs of Hugh Cassidy receiving gold pass from Charles Smale. Caption from St. Thomas Times-Journal, March 6, 1951, page eight: “Gets Gold Pass for Service.” 1_1666: “Fifty years of railroading service was recognized, Monday morning in the presentation by Charles Smale, superintendent of the Canadian Division of the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway (Pere Marquette District) of a gold pass from the president of the C. & O. System, to Hugh Cassidy, chief clerk to the superintendent for the last 33 years. It is the third gold pass to be given on the Canadian Division, the second in St. Thomas. First to receive a gold pass for 50 years or more of continuous service was Alex Larson, retired chief clerk to the divisional master mechanic. Mr. Cassidy started his long career as a water boy when the Pere Marquette line was being built from Dutton to St. Thomas. That was on June 1, 1901. From 1902 to 1906 he served as timekeeper for the maintenance of way department of the Canadian Division, then transferred to Grand Rapids, Mich., as an accountant. He continued there for four years, returning to St. Thomas in 1910 as joint facility accountant on the Canadian Division. Then in 1918 he was elevated to the position of chief clerk to the division superintendent. In all, he has served under 11 different superintendents, one in Grand Rapids and ten in St. Thomas. The gold pass presented to him on Monday entitled him and Mrs. Cassidy to travel anywhere on the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway System. “Mr. and Mrs. Cassidy and family live in the Southdale area, south and east of the city.”
