Scope and Content
Seven black and white photographs used in St. Thomas Times-Journal article published December 12, 1970 with captions: "Donating 20th Pint of Blood - Once one has made his first donation of blood, the giving becomes easier the second, third...and even 20th times. Ray Heddle, 75 Flora Street [St. Thomas], donor with glasses reclining on cot, appears to be enjoying the donation of his 20th pint, perhaps because of the two attractive clinic assistants, Mrs. Fred Winkler and Miss Bernadette Van Huystree. Mr. Heddle gave his 20th contribution during the October clinic. The next clinic will be held in Central United Church on Wednesday, December 16" (C8 Sh5 B1 F24 26a); "Behind the Scenes - The goodies which donors receive after they have given their pint of blood do not just materialize from nowhere. They are prepared during every clinic by members of Bethany Shrine (White Shrine of Jerusalem) and the Branch 41, Royal Canadian Legion Ladies' Auxiliary who willingly give their time and talents. Above, left to right, are Mrs. Gavin Scott, Mrs. Harry Read and Mrs. Charles Rowe, at work in the kitchen of Central United Church, the location of the blood clinic" (C8 Sh5 B1 F24 26b); "Students Too - Students from city secondary schools have been turning out in increasing numbers to the Red Cross blood donor clinics at Central United Church every two months. Ann Goldsmith, 17, a student from Central Elgin Collegiate Institute, is shown above receiving some friendly ministrations from Mrs. Ralph Payne, a St. John's Ambulance volunteer" (C8 Sh5 B1 F24 26c); "Taking A Sample - Before one donates blood, he must have a sample of his blood taken to determine the quality. It's a quick and simple procedure involving a slight prick of the finger with a test needle and, like the entire procedure of blood-giving, causes no real discomfort. Miss Thelma Rice of the Red Cross (above, left) performs the test on Mrs. Harry Frank, while Rev. W.W. Sherwin, minister of Central United Church where the clinics are held, awaits his turn" (C8 Sh5 B1 F24 26d); "Stickers, Pins and Badges - To donors who have given a certain number of pints, lapel pins, badges and window stickers are handed out. Here a 'Be Nice to Me...I've Given Blood Today' sticker is placed on the chest of John Heaslip, 60 Malakoff Street [St. Thomas]. Mrs. Walter Martin is placing the sticker while Mrs. Howard Graves looks on. Both Mrs. Martin and Mrs. Graves are Red Cross volunteers" (C8 Sh5 B1 F24 26e); "Snack and Chat - After giving blood and resting for a short period, donors are treated to coffee, tea, cakes, doughnuts and cookies prepared by members of the Branch 41, Royal Canadian Legion Ladies' Auxiliary, and of Bethany Shrine (White Shrine of Jerusalem), and served by Red Cross volunteers. In picture above, Mrs. Reg Crudge (left) and Mrs. Ray Gauthier pass the brownies to some of the donors" (C8 Sh5 B1 F24 26f); "Giving With a Smile - Donating blood is a relatively painless process. It requires minimal discomfort for the donor and maximal benefit for the eventual recipient. It requires only one half-hour of one's time and can mean a lifetime to someone else. With this in mind, it's not difficult to give with a smile, as Mrs. Ray Polley of St. Thomas demonstrates" (C8 Sh5 B1 F24 26g).
