Description
A plain taupe/neutral backing, the top border has space for a rod to hang. Quilt is hand-stitched, with neutral tones and pops of color. There's four panels with patterned border and images in the center depicting the story of Jumbo the Elephant. Images of Jumbo and the roof of the building are texturized w/ grey paint. On the panels there's writing; on the second panel 'Old home week 1935 St. Thomas', 'George's Jumbos would be would be here today if he had made them elephant grey'. On the third panel 'Jumbo was the St. Thomas Centennial Quilt featured at Central United Church in their quilt show July 1-4 1981', 'Hunter Crossley 18-Central-97 Methodist Church'. Panel four 'Jumbo the largest elephant ever seen by mortal man'. There is also writing on the back 'Jumbo historical square #3 of 4 squares donated to the Elgin Pioneer Museum. These are the 1st quilts that I ever made all by myself. I did it to preserve Jumbo's history'. Signed by her at the end of her note.

Description
Neutral tones with pops of color and all hand-stitched. On the top border there's a space to fit a rod for hanging. Four panels depicting the story of Jumbo the Elephant. On panel 1 'Scotty was warned about the freight train he thought they could reach the palace car before the train came. Jumbo could not be hurried that night!'. Panel two 'Jumbo was killed because of Matthew's error Jumbo never reached his palace car he died on the tracks on Woodworth Ave.' In the image in the car it says 'Jumbo's Palace Car'. In panel three 'Jumbo's flesh had to be burned. It was the largest roast ever held in St. Thomas It took 3 days and 6 cords of wood to reduce the flesh to ashes;' and panel four 'If he had lived, Jumbo would have had 3 or more years of growth. He would not have been able to go through the railway tunnels.' On the images peach paint was used fo adding skin tone on the face and hands, brown paint for the pants, shoes, stick and doctor's bag; and black paint for the top hat, shoes and collar on the coat; grey pain for the doctor's pants and Jumbo - adds some texture to the images on the 1st, 3rd and 4th panels. On the back of the quilt it says 'HIstorical square #2 of 4 donated to the Elgin Pioneer Museum by [donor] for the 2001 Celebrations' - 'No I gave the squares to the Railway Museum' signed by the donor.
