Scope and Content
Four black and white photographs used in St. Thomas Times-Journal article published January 25, 1982 with captions:
"Final Adjustment- Electrician Jim O'Meara of London makes a final adjustment on the electric eye which controls the new assembly line unloading mechanism installed at the Ford Talbotville plant prior to resuming production today." (C8 Sh4 B2 F1 155a)
"Right Height- Ford Pre-Delivery Department General Manager Frank Bates points out the height at which cars on the assembly line approach a new unloading machine which has been installed at the St. Thomas Ford Assembly Plant prior to continuing production. The machine, which automatically places the vehicles on a ground conveyor, a job previously requiring two people, will increase efficiency at the plant, Mr. Bates said. Although he could not give an estimate of the value of the apparatus, Mr. Bates said it cost 'a lot of money,' and pointed out that the addition of the new equipment indicated a continuing interest by the Ford Motor Company in the Talbotville operation." (C8 Sh4 B2 F1 155b)
"Checks Fit- Danny Fraser of Glencoe, who has been employed by Ford of Canada for 14 years and is now with the customer acceptance department, checks the fit of the doors on a Ford Escort which came off the assembly line before Christmas, in preparation for an internal audit at the plant today." (C8 Sh4 B2 F1 155c)
"Touching Up Escort- Senior employees of the Customer Acceptance Department of the St. Thomas Ford Assembly Plant were on the job last week preparing automobiles, which came off the assembly line just before Christmas, for production which resumed today. Here, Ron Harrison, vice-president of the St. Thomas local of the United Auto Workers of America, who has been with the company for 14 years, touches up paint on a Ford Escort. Mr. Harrison said the production line, which has been shut down since Jan. 5, would be fully staffed Monday. The plant will shutdown again, this time for two weeks, after a one week on period."
