Physical Description

Scope and Content
Black and white photograph used in St. Thomas Times-Journal article published June 20, 1967 with caption: "Historic Landmark - The Old St. Thomas Church on Walnut Street will be 143 years old on June 21 of this year. Of those years, all but 50 have seen the church being used. The towering steeple is well known to area residents, who still use the building for special summer worship services. The church was erected in 1824, after Captain Daniel Rapelje, one of the first settlers in this area, conveyed by deed two acres of land from his grant to the Lord Bishop of Quebec for the creation of a churchyard and the erection of a church. The graves of Captain Rapelje and his two sons are to be seen in the churchyard even today. The gothic steeple was added to the church in 1827, with the help of a monetary donation from none other than Colonel Thomas Talbot himself. Colonel Talbot was the British officer sent by the Crown to command the area around what was then a garrison of the British Empire."
