Physical Description
11 photographs : b&w ; 19.5 x 20 cm or smaller
Scope and Content
Eleven black and white photographs used in St. Thomas Times-Journal article published August 21, 1978 with captions:
"Tastes Good!- These young ladies were in top-place positions in the senior girls' cake contest at the Aylmer Fair. First, was Robbie Denharder, 13, of Park Street, Aylmer, top left; second was Carol Anderson, 14, top right, and third was her sister, Gail Anderson, 12, both from Springfield. Local epicure Sue McConnell judged the applesauce cakes baked by the girls." (74a)
"Pony Ride- Michele Stervinou, 3, of Mitchell Street, St. Thomas, rides on 'El Rocco the Wonder Pony', with the help of Buttons the Clown (alias Art Morris of Dorchester). Buttons and El Rocco strolled around the Aylmer Fair on Friday and Saturday, entertaining the children with their trucks and comedy routines. Mr. Morris said he and his pony will be appearing at the Canadian National exhibition in Toronto this week and 'someday, I want to get on the Mike Douglas show with him (El Rocco).'" (74b)
"Enthusiastic Artist- Jenny Phillips of Dutton, right, was at the Aylmer Fair displaying and talking about her oil paintings, which are mostly of farm animals, inspired by photographs taken by her husband. With the help of her sister, Barb Feick of St. Thomas, Mrs. Phillips displays her painting of the Carlsburg Team of horses as they appeared on Talbot Street in St. Thomas several years ago." (74c)
"Commercial Winners- Those entrants with the most impressive displays in the commercial section of the Aylmer Fair were presented with their ribbons earlier this week. Presenting the ribbon is Aylmer Fair Queen Charlene Raynham. Next to her is Larry Roszel of Welter's Furnishings and in the front are Jack Carroll and Vicki Tribe of the Royal Canadian Legion, Colonel Talbot Branch 81, who also won a ribbon for their display." (74d)
"Two Happy Winners- These two gentlemen have a right to be happy, they were winners at the Ayrshire Show at the Aylmer Fair Thursday night. On the left, Henry Helder, of Belmont, stands with Creekhome Lark, the four-year-old reserve grand champion heifer. To his right, is Bob Campbell, of Strathroy, with the grand champion of the show, Nancy Dale Episode." (74e)
"Candy Makers- These lads found part-time employment during the Aylmer Fair wrapping candy apples. Ron McGhee, who has been running concession stands at the fair for the past 26 years, said he always gets some local boys in to help him out. From left are Herbie Lecuyr, 12, of John Street, Aylmer, Johnny Thwaites, 13, of Myrtle Street, and Murray Tribe, 14, of Andrew Street." (74f)
"Midway Thrills- Laurie Nelson, 15, of RR 7, Aylmer (left) and Mary Catt, 14, of RR 2, St. Thomas, were among the many young people who enjoyed the rides in the Aylmer Fair Midway on Thursday. The midway ran in conjunction with the fair, which ended Saturday night." (74g)
"Rosy Choice- Seven-year-old Judy Bassett of Fourth Avenue, Aylmer, asked to pick an apple from all of the prize winning specimens on display at the Aylmer Fair, couldn't quite make up her mind- they all looked so good. Fruit judging was held at 2 p.m. Wednesday." (74h)
"Classy Rider- Wayne Allen of Blyth, Ont., was one of the three riders competing in the Western Open Parade Class of the Horse Show at Aylmer Fair. The competitors and their mounts for this event literally sparkled with fancy leather and metal work and embroidery. The name of Mr. Allen's horse is Spring's Winsom Wanella." (74i)
"Beautiful Babies- In the opinion of the judges at the Aylmer Fair Baby Show on Saturday afternoon, these nippers were the cutest. Sandra Hendel, 13 months, (left) was the girl choice and Matthew Johnson, 10 months, was judged the cutest boy. Here, they pose with their mothers, Rosemary Hendel and Irene Johnson, on a tractor in the gair grounds." (74j)
"The Heat Was On- At the Aylmer Fair Baby Show on Saturday, more than 100 babies, along with their moms and other anxious relatives, packed the upstairs of the arena to wait for the judges' decisions. Due to the lack of air-conditioning, the contest was hot, in more ways than one." (74k)
