Physical Description
4 photographs : b&w ; 24 x 15 cm or smaller
Scope and Content
Four black and white photographs used in St. Thomas Times-Journal article published April 29, 1981 with captions:
"Can Be Beaten - Ross Locey says cancer can be beaten and is living proof of it. He says people are scared of the word and thinks people should talk more openly of the disease in order to improve attitudes toward it. Mr. Locey underwent colbalt treatments to lick throat cancer." (98a)
"Still Active - Scott Kennedy was an active football and hockey player 10 years ago when his left leg started getting numb. It was diagnosed as a bone tumor, and at the age of 16 the leg was amputated. Scott continues his interests in local sports coaching minor hockey, and is president of Port Stanley Slifton Hotel of the Memorial Fastball League." (98b)
"Knowing Volunteer - Marion Blough, of Fifth Avenue, is a spry 70-year-old who looks at least 10 years younger than she is. For the past five years she has been the local Cancer Society convener for mastectomy visitation. She says she'd like some help, but it's not that she doesn't enjoy it. She gets her rewards. 'They are just so pleased when you come,' she comments on the visitation program. She averages two visits to each patient, but she has reached the point where she could start passing on the torch to someone younger. Mrs. Blough, a registered nurse herself, was a mother of two young boys when her family doctor diagnosed cancer of the breast in 1948. He recommended a mastectomy which was a relatively new operation in those days. Now, Mrs. Blough thinks that this area of treatment has advanced considerably. The operation is a highly successful one." (98c)
"Back to Normal - For James Brown, 75, of Walnut Street in St. Thomas, life is back to normal after having a colostromy operation three years ago. The retired breadman enjoys working around the yard, teasing friends, running errands and visiting his grandchildren." (98d)

She followed Terry's marathon run and was a good participant in the city's fund-raising run for cancer last summer." (101a)
"Sounds Last Post - While Ken 'Tiger' Barrett, of the Lord Elgin Branch of the Royal Canadian Legion, sounds the Last Post on his trumpet, 22-year-old St. Thomas resident Cheryl Williams, seated in her wheelchair, raises the City Hall flag from half to full mast. She was assisted by her cousin, Bonnie William." (101b)
