Physical Description
8 photographs : b&w ; 14 x 15.5 cm or smaller
Scope and Content
Eight black and white photographs used in St. Thomas Times-Journal article published October 1, 1960 with captions:
"Canadian Cancer Society - Emphasis on early diagnosis is one of the chief aims of the Elgin Cancer Unit. In addition much help is given patients in the form of comforts, dressings and often financial assistance. In the above picture, four members of the unit are seen packing dressings, from left to right, Mrs. W. H. Brennan, education committee; Mrs. H. D. Harper, co-chairman education committee; Miss Marion Still, service chairman, and Mrs. A. W. Galloway, education committee chairman." (4a)
"Friendship School - The Elgin-St. Thomas Association for Retarded Children maintains the Friendship School in St. Thomas were retarded children are given special lessons to help them become useful members of society. Much progress has already been made in meeting the educational needs of the children." (4b)
"Mental Health Association - This agency serves as a vital link between treatment centres and the community to help people released after treatment to become quickly rehabilitated. The White Cross clubroom is one of the features of this agency's work where patients and volunteers mingle and meet. In this picture, Mrs. Kent Griffin, mental health worker, left, chats with Mrs. Hazel Spahr and Miss Ada Maxwell." (4c)
"YWCA Camps - The Young Women's Christian Association is a haven for young women away from home as well as being a recreational and educational centre for the county. This picture was taken at one of the summer camps sponsored by the YWCA, a most successful venture." (4d)
"A Broken Home - This picture is posed but it nevertheless portrays a scene not uncommon to the social workers of the Children's Aid Society. Often because of conditions in the home, a child has to be taken from its parents until the situation improves. Meanwhile the child will be given the care and attention it needs as a ward of the Children's Aid Society." (4e)
"Help for the Blind - An extensive free library for young and old alike is maintained by the Canadian National Institute for the Blind. In this picture, a blind person uses her sensitive finger tips to pick out the Braille words in a book from the CNIB library." (4f)
"A Big Step - Many people have reason to be grateful to the local branch of the Canadian Arthritis and Rheumatism Society. This picture is typical of the work of the C.A.R.S. as an elderly person suffering with arthritis learns to make sue of her limbs again." (4g)
"Salvation Army - The Salvation Army counts welfare work among its many responsibilities, and brings to all the human touch of sympathy and understanding. It offers material help too as shown in the above photo where a needy family receives groceries from a Salvation Army Officer." (4h)
