606 Talbot Street, St. Thomas was taken over in late 1927 by the Sutherland Press Ltd., Frederick W. Sutherland, president. From 1928 to 1955, Sutherland Press shared the premises with the St. Thomas Box Co. Ltd. (and in 1929 only with the Lenox Manufacturing Co. Ltd., makers of overalls). From 1957 to 1983, Sutherland Press Ltd. is listed in city directories as the sole occupant of their building. From 1985 to 1993, the property is listed under the business name Loder-Sutherland, printing and advertising. The company printed books, pamphlets, and, for a part of its history, the town's newspaper, now the St. Thomas Times-Journal. The iconic headquarters of The Sutherland Press, Ltd. was one of the biggest and best of its time.

Item History
Gordon "Gord" Campbell was alderman. He was also the NDP candidate for Elgin in the provincial election. He was first elected as an alderman in 1981 and served until 2003, when he ran unsuccessfully. Campbell was elected again in 2006 and has sat on council until he retired, at age 75, in 2014.

Ronald Keith "Ron" McNeil (January 15, 1920 – March 18, 2003) was a politician in Ontario, Canada. He served in the Legislative Assembly of Ontario from 1958 to 1987, as a member of the Progressive Conservative Party. McNeil served on the municipal council of South Dorchester from 1946 to 1948, was its reeve from 1949 to 1952, and was a warden of Elgin County in 1952. Also in 1952, he served as chair of the centennial committee for Elgin and St. Thomas. This button was likely from his 1974 political campaign. He was victorious.

This button is probably from Ronald "Ron" McNeil's political campaign. Ronald Keith McNeil (January 15, 1920 – March 18, 2003) was a politician in Ontario, Canada. He was warden of Elgin County in 1952 and, also in 1952, served as chair of the centennial committee for Elgin and St. Thomas. Later, he served in the Legislative Assembly of Ontario from 1958 to 1987, as a member of the Progressive Conservative Party.

John Wise was born in St. Thomas, Ontario to a dairy farming family on December 12, 1935. Prior to his death, Wise was married to Ann for 54 years and they raised two daughters, with two grandchildren. Wise passed away in London Ontario on January 9th, 2013. John Wise was the the Reeve of Yarmouth (Elgin County, Ontario) from 1967 to 1968, and Warden in 1969. He was a member of Parliament in Canada from 1972 to June 3, 1979, from March 3, 1980 to September 16, 1984, and from September 17, 1984 to September 14, 1988. Between June 4, 1979 to March 2, 1980 and September 17, 1984 to September 4, 1988 John Wise held the position of Federal Agricultural Minister. During his career Wise was also critic for youth supply and services and the agriculture and dairy industry. This button is likely from his 1980 political campaign.

Marietta Lola Doreen Roberts (January 9, 1943 – October 4, 2020) was a politician in Ontario, Canada. She was a Liberal member of the Legislative Assembly of Ontario from 1987 to 1990. Roberts was educated at the University of Western Ontario, the Ontario College of Education and Dalhousie University. She taught at Alma College for three years, and then practiced law in the Elgin County area from 1971 to 1987. She also worked as a farmer. She was a founding member of the Ontario Child Representation Program, and served as the acting crown attorney for Elgin. Roberts also chaired the Elgin County Board of Education. She ran for the House of Commons of Canada for the federal Liberal Party in the 1974 federal election, and lost to Progressive Conservative John Wise by 2,502 votes in the riding of Elgin. This was a campaign button, likely from the July, 1974 campaign for which she was the Liberal candidate.

The Wallacetown Agricultural Society was established under its original name, the West Elgin Agricultural Society, at a meeting held January 16, 1860 in the Village of New Glasgow, Ontario. Beginning in 1862, the Society was based in Wallacetown, Ontario and operated the annual Wallacetown/West Elgin Fair. The organization was renamed the Wallacetown Agricultural Society at the annual meeting held January 26, 1966. This button is from the 44th annual fair, held in 1904.
