" Hugh Lyle, a cash crop farmer at RR 1, St. Thomas, cultivaties part of his 120 acres of soyabeans. The lack of moisture in the soil isevident from the parched ground. The yields per acre will be reduced unless there is sufficient moisture soon". (1a)
" Peter Oostvogels, who grows 40 acres of vegetables just north of Talbotville, has greatly increased his yield per acre by adding an irrigation system 10 years ago. He now has 3,000 feet of three and four-inch pipe, and he gets the water from a pond on his property, along with a deep well. He was able to get four pickings out of his strawberry crop, and in about a week or so, his sweet corn will be ready, after, the raspberry and bean crops." (1b)

" Elgin County farmers have begun the potato harvest. The crop began coming off the fields in the latter part of July. The harvester combine featured here is on the farm of Jack Meeuse of RR 1, Union. The drought Elgin suffered through created extra work for potato farmers, as they had to irrigate the crop." (2a)
" Area tobacco farmers will be priming the lower or sand leaves of the tobacco crop by the first week in August. Here, Ron Mervis, 17-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Mervis of RR 2, Aylmer, is topping the tobacco, in preparation for the harvest. By breaking off the flower, the nutrition is put back into the leaves." (2b)

" John Crabe, of RR 1, Fingal, was trying out his new plough Thursday preparing for summer fallow after the recent wheat harvest. Along with wheat, Mr. Crabe grow 100 acres of soy-beans which he says are in 'perfect' shape right now. He said his new plough was 'working well'." (3a)
" Cucumbers make summer salads a tasty delight. In fields in and around Elgin County, many farmers are harvesting the crops. In the past, it was done by hand, but today picking is done while sitting on a machine which moves through the field." (3b)
" The weekly Tuesday market in Aylmer features fresh fruit and vegetables arranged on outdoor stands. Much of the stock is grown in Elgin County, including grapes, apples, corn, squash, peaches, and tomatos." (3c)
" While we humans suffer through the warm and humid weather by taking refuge behind air conditioners and cold drinks, a cow's lot is a little lessy easy. But the heat does get to them, it seems and, when it does, they take refuge behind the nearest shade tree to cool off a little bit." (3d)

Four black and white photographs used in St. Thomas Times-Journal "Elgin County Farm News" Supplement, published August 29, 1978 with captions:
" Four-year-old Michael Virag, son of Mr. and Mrs. Mike Virag of RR 1, Union, shows one of the quality sweet peppers grown on the farm east of Port Stanley. Mr. Virag grow 30 acres of farm market products. The harvest started in mid August and, will continue until the fall." (4a)
" Ken VanRoestel, 13, spends his summer days working on the family's vegetable farm, just north of Aylmer on Highway 73. Here, Ken cuts off one of the cabbages which, along with numerous other varieties of vegetables, the VanRoestels sell. Jose VanRoestel, on the tractor, said the whole family is kept busy from April to November, tending the eight acres of vegetables most of which are sold to home canners. " (4b)
" Harold Bailey, 87, of St. Thomas has been farming most of his years. Here, he leans on a hoe while working on his four-acre plot in the east end of the city. Although his potatoes and turnips were destroyed by the drought, the tomatoes, peas, sweet corn, beans and carrots did well. He has supplied sweet corn for the Horton Street Market for over 40 years." (4c)
" The corn harvest in Elgin is under way and will continue until late fall. Here, Bill Campbell, of RR 6, St. Thomas, speeds the drying process of the corn by using a hay combine to cut the stocks. After a few days of drying it will be picked up with a forage harvester." (4d)

Seven black and white photographs used in St. Thomas Times-Journal "Elgin County Farm News" Supplement, published September 12, 1978 with captions:
" Donald Lunn, of RR 7, St. Thomas, is pictured 'chopping hay' for feed at his farm just north of Payne's Mills. It was the third and final cutting of the season." (5a)
" John Aarts, of the Farmer's Market, Wellington Road, finishes off the harvest of cauliflowers. Mr. Aarts grows 22 acres of vegetables." (5b)
" The pear harvest on the farm of Floyd Pearce, of RR 5, Aylmer, took place in the last week of August. "The crop was terrible, it just didn't grow," according to Mr. Pearce, who added that the situation was similar in all of Southwestern Ontario. The cause of the poor crop is not know, as even irrigated portions were poor. Pictured harvesting, left is Joanne Austin, 15, of Aylmer." (5c)
" On the right, 13-year-old Lisa Van Heukelom of Aylmer holds up a basket of pears picked on the farm. While the pear crop was poor, the apples, which will be harvested about September 20, are excellent. The reason for the difference is not known.." (5d)
" Doug Scheihauf, top photo, stands beside his Field Gymmy, an eight-ton fertilizer spreader owned by Elgin Co-operative Services. It is capable of spreading 50 acres per hour under favorable conditions. The flotation tires on the back are 43 inches wide and 66 inches tall." (5e)
" Below that, Greg Patterson, left, and Ian Carter of Urlin Grain Company Ltd. stand beside their Ag-Gator 1004. The four-wheel drive spreader has articulated steering which makes it easier to drive on wet ground. " (5f)
" The spreader box is also interchangeable with a sprayer unit (bottom photo) which is used to spread a 28 per cent nitrogen solution in combination with a corn herbicide. The spray boom hydraulically open up to a width of 50 feet." (5g)

Seven black and white photographs used in St. Thomas Times-Journal "Elgin County Farm News" Supplement, published September 26, 1978 with captions:
" Richard Bolt of Port Stanley, stands in the side door of the frame of a 36 by 72 foot barn he is erected for George Shaw southwest of St. Thomas. In spite of the numerous barns which were felled in last winter's hurricane, not too many are being replaced for various reasons." (6a)
" Marine Clement, farm manager at Great Lakes Farms, adjusts the temperature control on the natural gas furnace on the bulk kiln. The steel-insulated kiln is easier to load, and has better methods of controlling the drying process of the tobacco. Mr. Clement can remember the days of burning wood and coal to heat the kiln." (6b)
6c shares a caption with 6b. Pictures the exterior of the steel-insulated kiln owned by Great Lakes Farms.
" Mr. and Mrs. William Smolyn pick plums and apples on their nine acres of orchards at RR 4, St. Thomas. They have been farming there for 17 years. The plums are almost completed now and the crop was "pretty good," according to Mr. Smolyn. However, the apples are on the small side due to the lack of moisture during the earlier growing season." (6d)
" When George Brooks retired from the C&O Railway, he was able to pursue his hobby of gardening almost full-time. Mr. Brooks grow everything from onions to beets on his half-acre garden at RR 4, St. Thomas. He shows a neighbor, Jim Maynard, some of the grapes that are almost ready." (6e)
" N.G. Tufford, a dairy and cash crop farmer of RR 1, St. Thomas, uses a couple of 50-pound milk cans for decoration on his property. The era of the cans ended about a decade ago. Mr. Tufford feels that although the Ontario Milk Marketing Board has its shortcomings, the main advantage in having the organization is to provide stability to the dairy industry." (6f)
" Bob Thomas, of Great Lakes Farms, RR 2, Port Stanley, sets up the weed sprayer while his youngsters Brien, 3, and Bruce look on. He sprays under the trees to kill the weeds in order to make it easier to pick the windfalls from his 30 acres of apples. The McIntosh harvest begins this week. The weekend apple festival including free horse-drawn wagon rides and baking demonstrations begins this weekend at Great Lakes Farms" (6g)

Ten black and white photographs used in St. Thomas Times-Journal "Elgin County Farm News" Supplement, published October 10, 1978 with captions:
" Fifteen-year-old Jacob Froese of Straffordville, is surrounded by branches as he picks apples on the farm of Sam McLorn north of Sparta. The McIntosh harvest in now under way. The product this year is good although the trees are not heavy with the crop." (7a)
" John VanOorspronk, a hired hand on Cliff VanderPloeg's dairy farm at RR 2, Wallacetown, loads the liquid manure spreader. It is pumped from a cement manure pit 12 feet deep and 70 feet in diameter part of the farm's liquid manure system." (7b)
" Redi Quai, Elgin county's only large-scale grape grower, stands in his field of 27 acres at RR 5, St. Thomas, where the harvest is now under way. The Vineyard, as it is know, produces a variety of French grapes ideal for wine, juice or homemade jam. This year's crop was good." (7c)
"The tobacco harvest in Elgin came to a close last week, but some farmers are still harvesting. Here, Andy Van DeelPiepers, of Fingal, unloads the tobacco on a farm just outside of Port Stanley." (7d)
" John Brown, of RR 1, Fingal, fills the corn silo with this year's harvest. He grew about 40 acres of corn for feed. The main problem faced by the beef farmer in his area is the shortage of water, because of the difficulty of drilling deep wells." (7e)
" Ontario Minister of Agriculture and Food Bill Newman, centre, inspects the cranberry crop during "open house" at the Gibson Indian Reserve near Bala, Ontario. Showing him this year's crop are band chief Ken Commandant, left, and project manager Bud Rennie. This pilot project began in 1970 with a grant provided through the Federal-Provincial Agricultural and Rural Development Agreement (ARDA). The project provides 12 to 15 jobs for Native people. Since the first crop in 1975, production has almost tripled. The Iroquois Cranberry Growers expect a harvest more than 135,000 kilograms of berries in October." (7f)
" The late maturing Mutsu, a Japanese version of the Golden Delicious, is the latest variety of apples to be ready for harvest. Don Perry, an employee of Fruit Ridge Farm at Sparta, inspects the crop." (7g)
" Every function frm slaughtering to packaging is performed by Mrs. Susanne Mauer of RR2, Wallacetown to provide fresh chicken to customers. The operation is a small part of her husband Jeff's cash crop farm operation. The only problem with supplying fresh poultry is that they cannot meet the demand. All this year's poultry is spoken for by customers as far away as Toronto." (7h)
7i shares a caption with 7h. Pictures Mrs. Susanne Mauer washing a skinned chicken.
" Mixed cash crop farming is the most common type of farming operation in West Elgin. Constant deDeckere, of RR 1, St. Thomas, who grows everything from corn to cucumbers, hold up a young weaner from his farm." (7j)
