History / Biographical
The Burwell family emigrated to Upper Canada in the aftermath of the American Revolution, settling in the Niagara District in Bertie Township. A son, Mahlon Burwell, born in 1783, trained as a provincial land surveyor and came to Port Talbot in 1811 to work for the District's Crown Land Agent, Thomas Talbot. He surveyed most of the townships in the London and Western Districts and laid out the town plot of London. He was appointed to several key offices in the district including Registrar, was the Chairman of the Court of Quarter Sessions, the regional government of the day, and was elected several times to the Colonial Assembly. He was regarded as the region's contribution to the Family Compact.
He married Sarah Haun in 1810 and together they had 8 children. Several of his sons rose to positions of local significance within their communities, including Isaac Brock Burwell of Caradoc, John Burwell of Port Burwell, a community founded by his father, Hannibal the creator of this collection and Hercules, who succeeded him as Registrar of Middlesex.
Hannibal took over Mahlon's estate in Elgin County near Port Talbot and lived there with his family until 1871 when he moved the family to London. There he entered the city's elite, supporting the Church of England as had been the family's tradition. Hannibal's daughter Hannah married Rev. David Williams, destined to become the Bishop of Huron and the Archbishop of Ontario.
Of Hannibal's sons, only Alfred E. is represented in this collection. He received his father's papers and associated artifacts which after his own death in 1943, passed to his niece Mary Gweno Williams (later Mrs. K. Boughner) and thence to her daughter, the donor, Rebecca Boughner.
Custodial History
Records were in the custody of Colonel Mahlon Burwell, ca. 1835-1846; from 1846-1886, to his son Hannibal Burwell; 1886-1943 to his son Alfred E. Burwell; 1943-1968, to his niece Mary Gweno Williams Boughner; 1968-2013, to her daughter Rebecca Boughner (the donor).
Scope and Content
The Burwell Family fonds is primarily comprised of the personal and buisness papers of Hannibal Burwell (1825-1886), his son, Alfred E. Burwell (1871-1943) and his daughter Hannah Alberta Eliza Burwell (1864-1929), later Mrs. David Williams.
There are 20 related artifacts including two family bibles, a portable writing desk belonging to Hannibal's father, Mahlon Burwell (1783-1846), a prominent surveyor, Justice of the Peace and MLA, Albert Burwell's South Africa War medals and volunteer service medals and a portrait of Mahlon's daughter Louisa Burwell (1818-1834).
The fonds is divided into the following series:
-Associated Artifacts series, ca. 1800-1914
-Books series, 1808-1931
-Personal Documents and Ephemera series, 1810-1932
-Financial and Real Estate series, 1861-1886
-Correspondence series, 1863-1887
Name Access
Burwell (family)

Accruals
It is unlikely that additional material related to Hannibal Burwell will be obtained. This collection represents the donor's entire holdings related to that side of the family.

Scope and Content
Digitized copy of an original survey plan of the Township of Harwich, County of Kent, with annotations from around 1826 to 1843. A note at the bottom refers to this map as “A. Iredell’s plan’. Compared to other maps in this series, this plan has every lot filled with names and, if space merits, notes on each lot. The map’s use as a working document is apparent, as names have been crossed out and new ones added in. A section of lots are outlined in red ink and bear the note, ‘Reserved for the Crown by O.C. 8 March 1826’. Labelled geographical features are Lake Erie, Lake a la Pointe aux Pins, the River la Tranche (‘now Thames’ is beside it), ‘Block house’ at the edge of the river, and the boundaries of Raleigh, Chatham, and Howard Townships. A number of ink spills obscure some names. There are some pencil notes on the margins of the map referring to other sources.

Scope and Content
Digitized copy of an original survey plan of the Township of Harwich, County of Kent. This undated plan has annotations ranging from 1826 to 1848. Similar in appearance to RG 1-470-0-0-96, it has settler names, but not as many; sections of lots remain blank. Some names have been written over in ink; others have been crossed out, while other lots and names have been marked with a ‘D’. Similar to RG 1-470-0-0-96, it bears several of the same labels, such as ‘Reserved for the Crown by O.C. 8 March 1826,’ but like RG 1-470-0-0-97, it also bears the labels ‘Glebe’, ‘Town’, and ‘Blockhouse’, as well as an additional label specifying a mill. The River Thames and the boundaries of Chatham are also labelled. There is evidence that the river’s edge and surrounding creeks were redrawn on the map.

History / Biographical
Donald "Don" Leroy Cosens was born in St. Thomas, Ontario, on April 4, 1935, to Charles Roy Cosens and Viola Lulu Cosens (nee Smith). Cosens attended Myrtle Street Public School and St. Thomas Collegiate Institute in St. Thomas, and later, Westervelt Business School in London, Ontario. He married Lynda Karen Gloin of Yarmouth Centre, Ontario, on July 20, 1968, and they had two children, Mark and Josie (married Mike Nichol). Don worked for about three years at Clevite Corp, then became a law clerk at Stafford and Fanjoy Law Firm in St. Thomas, in 1960. A few year later, in October 1962, Cosens began working at the Elgin County Registry Office. He was appointed Senior Deputy Registrar three years later, and retired from the registry office in 1994 after a 31-year career. In 1969, Cosens also established an auction business, from which he retired in 1989, and his son, Mark Cosens continued this business. Cosens was involved in many local organizations in various capacities, including various masonic fraternal organizations and the Independent Order of Oddfellows. He served on various boards, including as a Member of the Board of the Canadian Red Cross, Member and President of the Board of Directors of the St. Thomas Cemetery Company, Member and Vice-President of the Board of the St. Thomas Mausoleum Board, and Trustee of the Talbotville Cemetery Board.
