Scope and Content
Photographs of students and instructors participating in different Education Week activities, including studying, painting, conducting interviews, baking, and participating in discussion groups. Caption from St. Thomas Times-Journal, March 3, 1951 page eleven: “Education Week: March 4-10: See That Influences, Forces Affecting Individual are Good; Each Community Gets Education it Wants, Writes A.V. Coulter in First Series of Articles for Education Week; Responsibility Lies on Individual, Who Must Recognize His Obligations to Others; the Place of Elective Bodies.” 1_1594: “Farm Forum Group in action—Education Week (March 4 to 10) will find the Farm Forum groups of Elgin County carrying on just as they have been doing for the last two years, meeting every Monday night during the National Farm Hour period, in homes or schools in the various forum areas. There are now six of these forums in active operation in Elgin County. They continue from early fall until early spring. “These discussion and social groups have become a great educational force in the rural communities. Matters of national importance and questions which touch on the lives and way of life for those engaged in agriculture, as well as on the wider field of national and international economy, are discussed, the topic for each week being announced in advance by the National Farm Forum. Once a month is review night when the forum groups meet largely for social purposes. “Above is shown a group of members of the Southwold Hilltop Farm Forum during a discussion period at the home of Elmer Harris, Scotch Road, Southwold, last Monday evening. Mrs. Douglas Major, R.R. 1, Port Stanley, is the young lady who is on her feet taking part in the discussion. In the right foreground with his back to the camera is Don Harris, who is general secretary of the Elgin Farm Forums. “This week-end the Elgin Farm Forums are inaugurating a new departure for the district and are holding a folk school at Corinth. It is designed to broaden the scope and outlook of rural life and to encourage rural people to take a more active interest in the affairs of the community, the province and the state.” 1_1603: “In the Reference Library—A.V. Coulter, in the accompanying article on Education Week, stresses the value of libraries as one of the agencies making a valued and constant contribution toward the creation of a better, improved community. Here we see two Grade 12A students from the St. Thomas Collegiate Institute—Bill Wilkins, 126 Alma street (seated) and Bob Clark, 100 Scott street, making use of the St. Thomas Public Library’s reference room with its volumes on many subjects, containing material which aids in the education of community service-minded citizens.” Caption from St. Thomas Times-Journal, March 5, 1951 page nine: “Second in a Series of Education Week Articles: ‘Education in the Home’; Type of Training Received Means Much in Later Life.” 1_1605: “First step in home education is teaching children to pray. Here little Jo-Ann, with her dolly, all ready for bed, kneels and says her prayers under the guidance of her mother.” 1_1606: “A little home coaching helps—In many homes the older members of the family, sisters, brothers or other relatives, students themselves, give a helping hand to the younger members. In the above picture, Kay Benn, 4 Ada street, a grade 12 student at St. Joseph’s High School, is seen coaching her nephew, Paul Swanson, aged 7, in the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Bert Swanson, 3 Sunset Drive. Paul is a student in grade 2, Holy Angels’ school.” Caption from St. Thomas Times-Journal, March 6, 1951 page nine: “The School’s Large Part in Education: From Kindergarten to Graduation; Inevitable Differences of Individual Students Recognized and Needs Met.” 1_1592: “Education starts early in schools—Here is shown Kindergarten or Grade 1 pupils at work in Art class at Homedale School. While three pupils are busy in the background, four others (left to right), Stephen Grimstead, 136 Elm street; Sheryl McClean, 14 Cyprus avenue; Janet Cuthbertson, 16 Cyprus avenue, and Bob Brown, 142 Myrtle street, are showing what they can do in pattern designing.” 1_1599: “In the pre-reading class—Two young students at Edward Street School—Louise Barnes, 147 Manitoba street, and Roland Wilcox, 107 Flora street—are seen here working with blocks and pegs, the idea being to get the colors of the same into a pattern.” Caption from St. Thomas Times-Journal, March 7, 1951 page eleven: “Fourth of a Series of Education Week Articles: Formal Education Fits Youth to Become Better Farmer, Better Citizen.” 1_1591: “Agriculture in the schools—The West Elgin High School at Dutton recognizes in full the value of instruction in agriculture, and classes in this form of education have been doing outstanding work for years. In the above picture students in the class are seen grading seed. Left to right: Gordon Guest, R.R. 1, Fingal; Frank Bolger, the instructor; Douglas Small, Iona Station; James McPherson, R.R. 5, Dutton; Leonard Reid, R.R. 1, Dutton; Ken Percival, R.R. 5, Dutton.” 1_1595: “Homemakers’ club in action—These clubs are sponsored by Women’s Institutes, and here we see the club sponsored by the Iona Station branch in action at the home of Mrs. Harvey L. Kendall, Iona Station, the leader in that district. Mrs. Kendall, at the left in the picture, is seen instructing the girls in the art of making muffins and the others in the picture are Marilyn Helborn, Illeen McLeod and Shirley Milligan with Betty Milligan in the foreground.” Caption from St. Thomas Times-Journal, March 8, 1951 page eleven: “Education Week: What Does Industry Expect of You?: World Becoming Greater Test of Knowledge and Technical Versatility.” 1_1601: “Finding their niche in industry—Before taking a position in an industrial plant, applicants must submit themselves to an interview with the heads of a personnel department and become analyzed as to what part they are best fitted to play. In this picture two applicants for positions in the Timken Roller Bearing Company’s plant are passing through the final phases of the test, and are being made acquainted with the details of the company’s policy, and the various benefits they receive as workers, such as insurance, sick pay, etc., by Horace Gladding, 52 Mitchell street, assistant to L.W. Lewis, director of personnel. The two applicants who have been accepted are William R. (Bill) Clark, whose home is in Port Stanley, and Gemma Fsadui. Miss Fsadui, 64 Malakoff street, a native of the Island of Malta, is also a vocalist of note, having been an opera singer in Malta before coming here about a year ago.” 1_1590: “Student at work on lathe—Lads who are planning to take a position in industry receive elementary instruction in the operation of machinery at the Arthur Voaden Vocational School, under the direction of Nelson Durst, teacher in machine shop work. The picture shows Gordon Matthews, 36 Mary street east, Yarmouth Heights, a student in Grade 11A, receiving instructions in turning a spiral on the lathe.” Caption from St. Thomas Times-Journal, March 9, 1951 page thirteen: “Sixth and Concluding Education Week Article: Labor Has Important Role; Unions Co-Operate to Train Youth and to Improve Citizenship.” 1_1598: “N.Y.C. Shop Apprentices in Class—Excluding the break of a few years just prior to and during World War II, an apprentice system has been in existence at the Michigan Central Railway (N.Y.C.) shops here for more than half a century. Today it is an integral part of the company’s shop operation with an apprentice school for all trades—machinists, boilermakers, carmen and electricians, in full operation. Four mornings each week, from 7 to 9 o’clock, the apprentices leave their machines, benches or wherever they may happen to be working, and sit down at desks in the adequately appointed apprentice room, there to carry out studies under the direction of their instructor, A.L. Simons, 94 Myrtle street. Reading and making blueprints, studying grammar, English and mathematics are included among the studies. The picture above shows one of the apprenticeship classes in session with Instructor Simons.”
