History / Biographical
Jabel Robinson was born in England on December 11, 1831, and immigrated to Canada in 1856, where he settled in St. Thomas, Ontario, with his wife, Caroline (nee Barnwell) and daughter, Harriet (Hattie). They had six more children after arriving in St. Thomas, including William Cleaver, Charles Barnwell, Jesse Daniel, Sarah (February 2, 1864), Kate (1866) and Franklin Jospeh (1870). Robinson worked in the carpentry trade, and later established a lumber and hardware business on Talbot Street in St. Thomas, and also worked as a police constable for St. Thomas. He was a member of both town council, and was instrumental in establishing a post office in Middlemarch. He represented Elgin West in the House of Commons of Canada from 1900 to 1904 as an Independent. Caroline (nee Barnwell) Robinson died in 1884, and Jabel later married Mary Mines, who died in 1906. Jabel Robinson died on November 8, 1907.
Custodial History
The diary was donated to Elgin County Archives from Louise Sifton (nee Lyle), who was a great granddaughter of Jabel Robinson, Harriet "Hattie" Robinson's father.

Scope and Content
Drawing depicting the incline railway and observation tower, Port Stanley, looking east, ca. 1880. William Fraser built the incline railway in the 1870s to allow guests at the Fraser House hotel on Fraser Heights to conveniently travel to and from the main beach. The observation tower was built adjacent to the incline railway as an attraction for visitors. The incline railway was originally powered by a steam locomotive. It was purchased by the London and Port Stanley Railway and electrified in 1915. The incline railway ceased operating ca. 1963 when its open cars were deemed unsafe and the owners decided it was not cost effective to convert to closed cars. View also includes the pedestrian walkway along the cliff top on Fraser Heights in front of the Fraser House hotel, Port Stanley main beach (at this time completely undeveloped), an early version of the west pier and lighthouse, and a schooner entering the harbour.
