History / Biographical
Jabel Robinson was born in England on December 11, 1831, and immigrated to Canada in 1856, where he settled in St. Thomas, Ontario, with his wife, Caroline (nee Barnwell) and daughter, Harriet (Hattie). They had six more children after arriving in St. Thomas, including William Cleaver, Charles Barnwell, Jesse Daniel, Sarah (February 2, 1864), Kate (1866) and Franklin Jospeh (1870). Robinson worked in the carpentry trade, and later established a lumber and hardware business on Talbot Street in St. Thomas, and also worked as a police constable for St. Thomas. He was a member of both town council, and was instrumental in establishing a post office in Middlemarch. He represented Elgin West in the House of Commons of Canada from 1900 to 1904 as an Independent. Caroline (nee Barnwell) Robinson died in 1884, and Jabel later married Mary Mines, who died in 1906. Jabel Robinson died on November 8, 1907.
Custodial History
The diary was donated to Elgin County Archives from Louise Sifton (nee Lyle), who was a great granddaughter of Jabel Robinson.
Scope and Content

General note: many of the records on this film are written in Latin. Section One: Baptisms This section contains:
An index of names, giving the page location and the baptism number for each person
Baptisms from November 9, 1861 to November 27, 1910 Information given: baptism date, name, date of birth, parents’ names, sponsors’ names, minster’s name. Sometimes details about their birth place, marriage, and confirmation are given. Note: the baptism records are out of order. They begin chronologically from July 13, 1890 to November 27, 1910. Then at the end of the records there is a section of various baptisms from different periods, going from November 9, 1861 to September 27, 1905. Section Two: Index of Baptisms This section contains:
An alphabetical listing of names which notes whether the baptism is described in Volume I (Section Three) or Volume II (Section Four), as well as the page number and the baptism number Section Three: Baptisms, Marriages This section contains:
A discussion of payments and various church elections
Marriages from October 13, 1839 to February 6, 1842

Baptisms, marriages, and interments from September 4, 1866 to September 10, 1889
Marriage certificates from February 23, 1881
A note that marriage records from 1872 to 1896 are missing
Confirmations from June 14, 1874 to June 10, 1886 Section Six: Baptisms This section contains:
Baptisms, marriages, and interments from November 10, 1889 to January 1, 1911
Confirmations from June 17, 1897 to May 18, 1904
Letters about marriages conducted January 14, 1918
A second baptism section from 1876 to September 10, 1889
An index that seems to only include names that start with M, and gives the page number and the entry number Information given: the second section of baptisms gives the date of baptism, name, date of birth, parents’ names, sponsors, and minster’s name. Note: many of these documents are torn and so some of the information has been lost. Section Seven: Marriages This section contains:
Marriages from September 16, 1896 to April 6, 1910 Information given: the name, age, residence, place of birth, occupation, religious denomination, and names of parents for the bridegroom, as well as whether he is a bachelor or widower, and the name, age, residence, place of birth, religious denomination, and names of parents for the bride, as well as whether she is a spinster or widow.
