Photographs of members of the Lions Clubs handing out Christmas hampers. Caption from St. Thomas Times-Journal on December 23, 1949, page one: “Two of the Many Organization Taking Care of the Needy of St. Thomas at Christmas.” 2_2835: “Some of the heap of good cheer that the St. Thomas Lions Club sent out on Thursday afternoon that certain deserving families in the city many have a happy day at Christmas. And judging from the expressions on the faces of some of the Lions Club members pictured here as they sped things on their way, the ones responsible for the project are fairly happy about the situation too. They are (left to right) Jim Gillick, club bulletin editor; Carl Custance, chairman of the club’s health and welfare committee, which arranged the project: Arthur Galloway, immediate past president of the club; John Ashton, Frank Kondal, second vice-president; and Harold Corbett. In al, about 30 baskets of food and toys went out to different families, and it is estimated that close to 200 people will benefit on way or another because of the club’s action. It is understood, too that in one of two cases, clothing was sent out to other families whose need appeared more urgent in this matter.”

Photographs of new playground equipment being made for local parks. Caption from St. Thomas Times-Journal on December 31, 1949, page one: “Pinafore Park Workshop Manufactures Playground.” 2_2856: “During the past few weeks, St. Thomas has acquired another new industry, though nothing has so far been mentioned about it. Some of its products are picoted in the above photograph, taken Thursday at Pinafore park where the dressing room at the east end of the ball park grandstand has been converted into a small factory. The enterprise belongs to the St. Thomas Recreation Commission, whose director, William Pillsworth, is serving as production manager. It was set up to produce playground equipment, which has been scarce and costly since the war. By spring, the workshop expects to have produced a good supply of teeter-totters, swings, slides, parallel bars and assorted other pieces of equipment for distribution among the city’s increasingly numerous children’s parks. In the above photograph appear Albert Pimlatt, superintendent of Pinafore Park, with Mr. Pillsworth in the foreground and garageman Ernest Schram and James Connoy, playground maintenance man on the staff of the Recreation Commission, all of whom have been engaged in workshop activities since the project was begun. The solidly constructed equipment shown above is all portable and can be quickly mounted on bedded timber wherever it is to be set up. The slide, swings and teeter-totter comprise a single combination unit designed for use for the youngest children. Five of these are scheduled for productions during the winter. Four other similar units, built on a larger scale for use by older children, are also on tap, plus a selection of separate pieces. The result of the winter’s work will be found in much better equipped playgrounds next summer and the city will have acquired the equipment at much lower cost then it could have been purchased from other sources, Mr. PIllsworth states.”

The photograph shows three children of Alma Street, Presbyterian Church who will be coming to Sunday School on the first day of the new year as they are accustomed to do each Sunday. They themselves can scarcely be aware of the significance of their coming or of what it means to be starting the year right and life right, but they look forward happily to Sunday School each Sabbath Day and their going sets a patter for years to come. Paul West, four-year-old son of the ministers of the church, Rev. J.K. West, and Mrs. West, holds the door open for two little neighbors, Judy Bridges (left), daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Bridges, and Carol Denny, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Denny, both three years old and both of 27 Horton Street.”
