Birchall was known as "The Saviour of Ceylon" after warning of a Japanese attack on the island of Ceylon during the Second World War; he was the recipient of the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Order of the British Empire (type-written details are also included). W9 B2 449 was published in the Rodney Mercury on November 14, 1985, with the caption: "Rodney Kiwanian hosted World War I and II veterans at Monday night's meeting at New Glasgow Restaurant, where Rev. Jim Potter of the United Church was the speaker. Pictured are George Robinson, John Messerschmid, Bob Gray, both of Beattie Haven, Roy Carpenter of Duart, and Kiwanian Les Welch, a Ferry Command pilot in the last war. The only other WWII veteran from West Aldborough is George Cornwall of the Bobier Home, who could not attend."

"And A Merry Christmas - Leo MacMillan, left, represents the 94 veterans in the Ontario Hospital who receive candy and cigarettes yearly from the Canadian Red Cross. Seen here are, left to right, Mr. MacMillan; Wallace Capern, assistant chief attendant; Dr. C.A. Cleland, superintendent of the hospital; Mrs. Danny Hayes, chairman of the visiting committee; L.J. Anderson, president of the St. Thomas Branch of the Canadian Red Cross; and Mrs. Helen Whitman, director of nursing at the hospital." (39a)
"Christmas Tour - Student nurses taking their psychiatric affiliation at the St. Thomas Ontario Hospital Monday night toured 29 wards singing carols and populat Christmas songs. Representing five area hospitals, the 33 students were accompanied by Robert Ashton of the attendants' staff playing the guitar. The group represents students from the St. Thomas-Elgin General Hospital; Hamilton Civic Hospital; St. Joseph's Hospital, Chatham; Kitchener-Waterloo General Hospital; and Grace Hospital, Windsor." Photographs of Eduard Trijssenaar, Second World War veterans from Elgin County, and Mary Duncan of Barwick Street, St. Thomas. Caption from St. Thomas Times-Journal: "Man Who Befriended Elgins in Eindhoven Pays Visit to St. Thomas and District: Visitor From Holland Guest of Elgin Veterans." "Eduard F. W. Trijssenaar, of Eindhoven, Holland, now touring the United States as a representative of the Dutch Film and Cinema Union, has made a special side-trip to Canada to visit the homes of men of the Elgin Regiment who stayed at his home during the winter of 1944-45. In the upper photograph [47-1100] taken on Monday afternoon when Mr. Trijssenaar, who is visiting at the home of Lloyd Elliott, West Lorne, was in St. Thomas, he appears in the centre of the group. The others are, from the left, Firth Stokes, Lloyd Elliott, W. B. Tahylor and W. J. Stollery, all of whom served with headquarters of the Elgins at Eindhoven. While here, Mr. Trijssenaar also visited Mrs. Kenneth Duncan, the former Mary Bakker, of Rotterdam, at her home in Barwick street. A family friend, he brought her news of home from members of her family. They were photographed at Mrs. Duncan's home."
