Hume and Son, Springfield, on Monday with representatives of the local committee and municipal officials, cows in Mr. Hume's Holstein herd inquisitively joined the unusual gathering in their pasture. The cows alternated between looking solemnly and racing 'round and 'round the group like a band of Hollywood Indians. The plowmen were able to carry on despite the diversion."

R. 2, Springfield, on whose farm the big match will centre in October, has his hands full these days. Realizing this, two helpful neighbors turned out Wednesday to help combine Mr. Hume's 60 acres of oats, thereby cutting at least five days off the time normally required for the work. Here, cutting a wide swath through the Hume oat field are Leo Bogart, in the lead combine; Charles Clarke, centre, and Giles Hume (Mr. Hume's son), bringing up the rear. It was expected harvesting would be completed today."

Three black and white photographs used in St. Thomas Times-Journal article published October 11, 1960 with captions:
"Business Operations Continue- When a spectacle as large as the International Plowing Match is presented, many people are responsible for its success. Shown ironing out some of the problems which invariably come up in such a huge undertaking, are, left to right: Frank Pineo, chairman of Local Commitee, and Elliot Moses, a director of the Ontario Plowmen's Association." (C8 Sh5 B2 F6 85a)
"Father And Son- Plowing got under way bright and early this morning at the I.P.M. Elgin County was well represented in the boys and girls 14 to 17 class. In the above photo, Arnold Stansell, a prominent Aylmer Ayrshire breeder, is pictured coaching his son Stewart. Both Mr. Stansell and Stewart said the land was very dry for plowing and the crown of each furrow had a tendency to crumble." (C8 Sh5 B2 F6 85b)
"Changed Scene- Thomas J. Hume is pictured here looking out over the Tented City that has mushroomed on his farm near Springfield. The Hume farm is the center of operations in the 47th International Plowing Matches which began this morning on 14 Springfield area farms." (C8 Sh5 B2 F6 85c)

Six black and white photographs used in St. Thomas Times-Journal article published October 12, 1960 with captions: " First Aid At Tented City- The St. John Ambulance is on hand to give first aid service during the four days of the I.P.M. at Springfield. In the above picture Mrs. Mabel Warden, St. Thomas, is seen getting ready with bandages and other first aid needs." (C8 Sh5 B2 F6 9a) " Feels Like Fun- These two youngesters, John Pridhan, of Palmerston and David Pearson, also of Palmerston, are too young to plow in the I.P.M. Nevertheless they climbed onto a tractor seat to see what it is like to handle the farmer's maid of all work." (C8 Sh5 B2 F6 9b) " K. P. Duty- Serving hundreds of spectators and contestants at the IPM can be quite a chore but the Springfield United Church women have organized an army of volunteers for the job. Pictured, left to right: Mrs. Earl Charlton and John Collins, both of Springfield, shown cleaning up after the morning meal. The dishes are but a small portion of those in use during the day's meal serving times, which run from early morning till almost 8:00 p.m. All must be left in order for the next day's work schedule, and the eight hour day is impossible." (C8 Sh5 B2 F6 9c) " Provincial Police Display- The Ontario Provincial Police Display at the International Plowing Match has attracted many people. The police officers show the spectators about the tent, explaining the use of each piece of equipment and its value to the force.Corporal A. H. Barker, of the Woodstock detatchment, is shown in the above picture explaining the photographs to Miss Jean Barron and Mrs. Gilbert Barron of RR 2, Woodstock." (C8 Sh5 B2 F6 9d) " Mayor For Four Days- Ken Bawden, well known R. R. 7, St. Thomas farmer, was elected Mayor of Tented City 1960 at yesterday's opening ceremonies at the I.P.M. Ken is pictured here wearing his full regalia." (C8 Sh5 B2 F6 9e) " Queens Of The Furrow All- Although competitors in the Queen of the Furrow Contest at the International Plowing Match Wednesday possess a wide knowledge of plows and tractors, they obviously do not lack in beauty either. The pretty farmerettes, shown above in this Times-Journal photo, are left to right, front row: Miss Barbara Mason, representing Peel County; Mrs. Ronald Prong, Elgin County; Miss Olive Bell, Perth; Miss Doreen Howett, Huron; Miss Jerilyn Deans, Brant; Miss Audrey Swan, Hastings; Miss Betty Opersko, Norfolk; back row: Mrs. James Smith, Grey; Miss Ruth Miller, King and Vaughan; Miss Ann Mark, Victoria; Miss Katharine Caverhill, Middlesex; Mrs. Orville Fried, Oxford; Miss Margaret Baker, Ancaster; Miss Diana Tait, Algoma; Mrs. James C. Reid, Halton; Mrs. Allan Murray, Haldimand; Miss Marguerite Brown, North Dumfries." (C8 Sh5 B2 F6 9f)

Four black and white photographs used in St. Thomas Times-Journal article published October 13, 1960 with captions: " Attorney-General Visits IPM- The Attorney-General of Ontario, the Hon. Kelso Roberts, took time off from his busy schedule to visit the International Plowing Matches at Springfield yesterday. He was greatly impressed with the spectacle and stated that he thought this was the best he had attended in the six years he had been coming to the annual event." (C8 Sh5 B2 F6 10a) " An Ancient Art- One of the most interesting places to visit in Tent City, scene of this year's International Plowing Match, is the south end of the Elgin County tent, where the historical conveners of Elgin County Women's Institutes have set up their display of museum items. Crowds appear in ever-increasing numbers, not for merely a casual look, but for careful inspection. Here is history, as their forefathers knew it, and articles like handwoven carpets that have been used for a century and a half; huge ironstone china soup tureens from which seven sons of an old Southwold family were fed; a syrup tankard of glass and ancient silver, all were objects of solemn admiration. Scores of other visual items of bygone days shared equal interest, as did the revival of almost forgotten skills and ploys. Mrs. Anna Obendorf, of 6 Beverly Street, St. Thomas, is an expert in the carding and spinning of wool, which few people today have ever seen. Learned as a girl in her native Hungary, Mrs. Obendorf brought the skill with her when she came to her new homeland, Canada, six years ago. Here, with wooden spinning wheel, she manipulates the loom and shuttle for the benefit of enthusiastic spectators, who had found something new under the sun, in something old." (C8 Sh5 B2 F6 10b) "Queen Of Furrow- Elgin County's entry, Mrs. Lynda Prong, of the Aylmer district, won the Queen of the Furrow title for her home county at the International Plowing Matches at Springfield yesterday. This picture shows a radiant Mrs. Prong as she is crowned by Mrs. Stanley Hall, wife of the MPP for Halton County." (C8 Sh5 B2 F5 10c) " A Close Check- John Barley, of R.R. 4, Seaforth, on tractor, is being closely watched by Bill Deans, of R.R. 2, Paris, to see if the furrow he is cutting is deep enough. John was one of the contestants in the junior matches held at the I.P.M. near Springfield yesterday." (C8 Sh5 B2 F6 10d)

Five black and white photographs used in St. Thomas Times-Journal article published October 15, 1960 with captions: " Many Trophies- One of the outstanding plowmen to compete in the 1960 International Plowing Matches was Cecil Wells, R. R. 2, Paris. Mr. Wells won more than one plowing class and is seen above as he received an Ontario Plowmen's Association Trophy from James A. McBain, M.P. for Elgin." (C8 Sh5 B2 F6 12a) " Bank Trophy To Thornton Man- W. K. Thomas, R. R. 2, Thornton, was the winner in one International Plowing Match event and was on hand last night to receive a Bank of Montreal Trophy from G. L. Johnstone, manager of the St. Thomas branch of the bank. More than 30 presentations were made during the evening." (C8 Sh5 B2 F6 12b) " Agricultural Minister Speaks- A highlight of Last night's International Plowing Match banquet at the Elgin St. Thomas Memorial Arena was a brief talk by the Hon. W. A. Goodfellow, Ontario Minister of Agriculture, who is seen above as he addressed the gathering of nearly 1,200 people. In the background may be seen Mrs. Lynda Prong, R. R. 1, Aylmer, the International's first queen of the furrow." (C8 Sh5 B2 F6 12c) " Fine Horses- One of the closing events of the I.P.M. was a horse show held near the main entrance. To qualify for prizes in the show the horses must have plowed in the competitions on at least one of the four days of the show. The animals, all draught-horses, are pictured above awaiting the judge." (C8 Sh5 B2 F6 12d) " Centre Of Interest- The new farm inventions class added this year to the International Plowing Match produced several odd but useful machines. The one in the above photo is a two furrow roll-over plow made by Frank Baertsoen and Sons located on Highway 3 two miles west of Aylmer. The plow is designed so that when the plowman comes to the end of a furrow he pulls a lever, the plow rolls over, and he can start back in the same furrow. Pictured from left to right around the tractor are Arnold Baertsoen, Charles Baertsoen, (driving), and Frank Baertsoen." (C8 Sh5 B2 F6 12e)
