History / Biographical
Herbert William Cooper was born July 16, 1882 in Hobart, Tasmania, Australia.
As a child, Cooper lived with his family in Australia, where he attended boarding school and worked in a mining camp. At some point he emigrated to Canada where, preceding and during the first two years of the First World War he served as a Quarter Master Sergeant and military recruiter at a military depot in Toronto, while also working as a freelance illustrator and writer for Macleans magazine.
Cooper enlisted for service with the Canadian Expeditionary Force on September 16, 1915, at Niagara, Ontario, and was assigned regimental number 510199.
In 1916, Cooper was posted to active war service in Europe as a non-commissioned officer with the Canadian Expeditionary Force, serving as a Transport Staff Sergeant with the mounted ambulance corps in Belgium and as a Quarter Master Sergeant in France.
In January, 1918, Cooper was assigned to the Topographic Section, Intelligence Branch, Canadian Corps Headquarters, France, where he worked constructing scale models in clay of the Canadian front lines, based on maps, aerial photographs and other materials.
In July, 1918, Cooper returned to front line duty, first with the Royal Flying Corps (R.F.C.) and then with the Canadian Corps Survey Section working as an observer, flash spotter and document runner.
From December, 1918 to January, 1919, Cooper was posted to Canadian Corps Headquarters in occupied Bonn, Germany and was then transferred to Jodoigne, Belgium, where he served until early April, 1919 when he was transferred to the Canadian War Narrative Section (CWNS), Canadian Corps Camp, Bramshott, Hants, England.
In June, 1919, Cooper was transferred with the CWNS to Ottawa, Canada. His letters indicate that he planned to continue serving with the CWNS until early autumn, 1919, when he intended to seek his discharge papers and relocate to New York City to seek work in “the advertising business” as a copy writer/ illustrator.
Cooper was officially discharged from active military service on August 8, 1919.
Cooper's digitized service file, part of the collections of Library and Archives Canada, is available online at: http://central.bac-lac.gc.ca/.item/?op=pdf&app=CEF&id=B1973-S003.
Custodial History
The records contained in this fonds were collected and maintained by Ella Lewis, Aylmer, Ontario, in her role as Secretary and Treasurer of the Aylmer Travel Club. During the First World War, Lewis and other members of the Club sent gifts of socks, tobacco and other items, and corresponded with members of the Canadian Expeditionary Force serving in Europe. Lewis acted as an unofficial agent for Cooper during the period of their correspondence, 1916-1919, attempting to secure the publication of Cooper's sketches and drawings, as well as excerpts from his letters. Lewis' annotations to the letters indicate she negotiated on Cooper's behalf with Thomas B. Costain, editor (1917-1919) of Macleans magazine, and other internal evidence contained in the letters indicates that Macleans published some of Cooper's material. At some point, the letters, sketches and drawings comprising this fonds came into the possession of George L. Gray, a former principal at Arthur Voaden Secondary School and St. Thomas Collegiate Institute in St. Thomas, Ontario, who subsequently donated them in October 1973 to the Elgin County Pioneer Museum in St. Thomas, where they were received and catalogued under file number 3144 and stored in Document Room Box C2. The records contained in this fonds were transferred to the Elgin County Archives in 2006.

History / Biographical
The history of the St. Thomas-Elgin General Hospital began with the establishment in 1891 of its first predecessor institution, the Amasa Wood Hospital, named for its founder, the Elgin County philanthropist Amasa Wood. The Amasa Wood Hospital School of Nursing was established in 1892.
When the City of St. Thomas required expanded hospital services following the First World War, the new Memorial Hospital was built in 1923-1924. Nursing education in the city continued under the auspices of the new hospital, under the name Memorial Hospital Training School for Nurses.
A further expansion of hospital services was required following the Second World War and, consequently, the St. Thomas-Elgin General Hospital was constructed, and opened on May 11, 1954. That same year the St. Thomas-Elgin General Hospital School of Nursing accepted its first students. Memorial Hospital continued to operate, as a chronic care unit of the new hospital. Beginning in the late 1950s, the hospital's School of Nursing facilities were modernized and expanded and re-opened in August, 1959 as the Dr. J.W. Snell School of Nursing.
In 1961, St. Thomas-Elgin General Hospital established a 10 year plan for enlarging and updating its facilities. Construction began in 1964. By 1966 a new paediatric wing, emergency department, radiology, physiotherapy and male surgery wing were added giving a total of 301 beds in the active unit, and in 1970 the hospital's Cardiac Unit opened.
In 1974, the Province of Ontario transferred responsibility for nursing education from hospitals to community colleges. Beginning in 1975, the former St. Thomas-Elgin General Hospital School of Nursing began operating as the St. Thomas campus of London, Ontario-based Fanshawe College.
The 1980s brought development of an ICU/CCU progressive care area with a bed capacity of thirteen, and the operating rooms were renovated, bringing the total of operating rooms to six, plus one recovery room.
Major construction again took place in 1990, providing new space for Materiels Management (including Central Stores and Central Supply), Rehabilitation Services and Long Term Care beds in the Continuing Care Centre (CCC). Patients were transferred to the new CCC from the old Memorial Hospital, which was then closed. Improvements in services continued through the 1990s, with advances in information technology and the addition of a CT Scanner, Bone Mineral Densitometer, Sleep Lab, and Mammography Suit.
The St. Thomas-Elgin General Hospital Archives was founded in 2000, with the assistance of hospital staff and volunteers including Donna Bethune, Mary Jane Doan, Susan Gordon, Steve Peters, Chris Stinson and Sue Wadley. The Archives was disbanded and its collection donated to the Elgin County Archives and Elgin County Museum in June, 2008.
Custodial History
Records were collected and maintained by the St. Thomas-Elgin General Hospital Archives and donated to the Elgin County Archives by deed of gift in June, 2008.
Scope and Content
Fonds consists of records collected and maintained by the St. Thomas-Elgin General Hospital Archives relating to the operation of the St. Thomas-Elgin General Hospital, the St. Thomas-Elgin General Hospital Foundation, the St. Thomas-Elgin General Hospital School of Nursing, the Memorial Hospital, the Memorial Hospital Training School for Nurses, the Amasa Wood Hospital and the Amasa Wood Hospital School of Nursing.
