Photographs of the R.C.A.F.'s H-Hut in Yarmouth Centre. The buildings were proposed to become a future convalescent hospital. Caption from St. Thomas Times-Journal: "Future Convalescent Hospital in St. Thomas?" "When the war in Europe was coming to a close and nobody knew how long it would take to finish off the Japs, the R.C.A.F. took steps to add mroe living space to the accomodation at its Yarmouth Centre fighter pilot training field. The Japs threw in the towel about the same time workmen finished the above two-storey H-hut, the R.C.A.F. called off further training, and since then this building has stood empty. But it is about to be put to good use at last. The city of St. Thomas is purchasing the building from War Assets Corp., tenatively planning to move it by sections to a site within the city limits and to convert it into a hospital to accomodate between 40 and 50 patients suffering chronic ailments, or convalescing. The idea is to relieve the congestion at the Memorial Hospital as much as possible and as quickly as possible. So far the plan has met with no opposition, though there are some who don't think the move will help the situation at the Memorial Hospital much. Everyone appears to favor the taking of immediate steps to increase the amount of hospital accommodation in this city. But there have been suggestions that the vacant ground at the Hopewell Hospital at the west end of Chester street is no place for a convalescent hospital, situated as it is backing on a cemetery with a mausoleum for a neighboring building, a big sewage disposal plant down in the valley below, a noisy railroad yard a few hundred yards away, and being out-of-the-way spot to start with. For years the place has been caleld "Misery Hill." "Why more the building at all? - leave it where it is and let convalescent patients get plenty of good fresh Yarmouth township air away from the city," one interested citizen says. Doctors, on the other hand, would prefer to have the building mroe conveniently located within the city limits, and the arguement has been put forward that it should be sited where quiet reigns and which, at the same time, is accessible to people who have to walk to visit patients. A location in the southeast section of the city would seem to meet these specifications. However, this end of the business is still very much up in the air and no decisions have been made, nor can be made, until the deal with the W. A. C. has been completed. Both city and hospital authorities are open for suggestions."

Photograph of the Officers Mess building at the Yarmouth Centre Airport, New Sarum, which was sold by the War Assests Corporation to St. Thomas to be used as a convalescent hospital. Caption from St. Thomas Times-Journal: 'Airport Building to Become St. Thomas Convalescent Hospital: When civic and hospital officials here began dickering for a building at the Yarmouth Centre Airport which might be purchased from War Assets Corporation and converted into a convalescent hospital, they favored a two-story H-shaped building completed just as the war came to an end in the summer fo 1945. War Assts Corp. said they could have it. But officials of the hospitals devision of the Ontario Department of Health preferred a one-storey building three of four years older which has served as the student and staff officers' quarters. Fortunately, War Assets Corp. said they would sell it in place of the other two-story building, and the deal is now being put through. The Department of Health, in addition to preferring the onestory building, which is pictured above showing the south front facing on the airport, recommended that the building should be purchased together with its present site, which is only about three and a half miles east of the city. Negotiations toward this end are also under way. Mayor Bruce Caldwell, who is pressing the deal to early completion, hopes to see the building converted inside three months and to have it in use by 25 to 30 convalescent and chronic cases from the Memorial Hospital, whose removal from there would materially relieve the congestion which has existed there for many months."
