Scope and Content
Two black and white photographs used in St. Thomas Times-Journal article published August 22, 1967 with captions: "New Sundeck at Hospital - Tommy Simons, 10, of RR 1, Southwold, and Ronald Stressman, of 120 Hydro Road, are among the many patients enjoying fresh air and sunshine on the St. Thomas-Elgin General Hospital's new sundeck. The 3,800-square-foot deck has been in use for some time now and has received much praise from patients. A welcome addition to the hospital facilities, the deck is gaily outfitted with cedar furniture and artifical trees, all of which was provided by the St. Thomas Kiwanis Club. The deck sports six large parasols and has a seating capacity of 32. Dr. A.R. Post, who initiated the project, says the sundeck is 'very much appreciated by the physiotherapy, rehabilitation and pediatrics divisions at the hospital, and should help the patients to a speedy recovery" (C8 Sh5 B2 F1 22a); "Present Cheque - During a dinner meeting held on the new sundeck at the St. Thomas-Elgin General Hospital last evening, the St. Thomas Kiwanis Club presented a cheque for $1,500 to the hospital board. The money will be used by the board to pay for the cedar patio furniture now being used by hospital patients. Seen in the photo, from left to right, are W.E. Rowe, chairman of the hospital board's finance committee; Dr. A.R. Post, president of the medical staff at the hospital; Harvey Liddle, chairman of the hospital board; M.D. Thompson, president of the St. Thomas Kiwanis Club; Ray Jones, assistant administrator of the hospital; and J. Fred Green, the architect who designed the sundeck. Also on hand for the meeting were [St. Thomas] Mayor V.A. Barrie and MP for Elgin Harold Stafford, as well as Kiwanians and hospital staff members" (C8 Sh5 B2 F1 22b).
