History / Biographical
Joseph Henry Welch (Regimental Number 189736) attested in the 91st Battalion at St Thomas on the December 25, 1915. He was a machinist's helper and listed his mother Isabel Welch as his next of kin. He sailed from Halifax on the SS Olympic on the June 18, 1916. On September 6, 1916, he was admitted to hospital with the mumps. His records show him wounded in the abdomen on May 4, 1917. He was discharged from hospital on June 29, 1917. He was "Discharged from His Majesty's Service on Demobilization" on the January 22, 1919 in London Ontario. His pay record shows that he sent $15 a month home to Isabel Welch.
Scope and Content
Correspondence (two pages) written by Corporal Joe Welch to his friend "Johnnie", dated December 12, 1917. The letter is handwritten on YMCA letterhead. Transcription:

Dear Friend Johnnie:
I received a parcel from use [sic] boys and girls of the Dutton Public School and think it very nice of the school and to think that they have not forgot thare [sic] boys that is away fighting for them. I am well and hope this letter finds you all the same. I am having a pretty good time over hear [sic]. I am going on pass for Christmas up to Stockport Eng. I spent my last Christmas in the trenches. I was in France ten months and got wounded, so believe me I will put a good time in this Christmas. I suppose Johnnie that Dutton is about the same. I wish I was back there again. Well John, thare [sic] has been a few of the Dutton boys got killed that will never see Dutton again. I was on draft to go back to France but was taken off it again. I hope I will see the day when I will see Dutton again. I have not much to tell you this time so I will close hoping you all a Merry Christmas. Goodbye.

Black and white photograph showing 91st Overseas Battalion, Canadian Expeditionary Force officers and their wives at Canterbury Cathedral, England, August 1916, on the occasion of the deposition of the Battalion's colours. Many officers of the 91st Battalion paid to have their wives accompany them to England, where many of them remained until their husbands returned to Canada from active service in 1919. Among the officers who can be identified are the Battalion's commanding officer Lieutenant-Colonel W.J. Green (seated in a chair in the front row, fifth from the left), second in command Major Frederick George Stanbury (seated in a chair in the front row, second from the left), B Company commanding officer Major Alfred Edward Medcalf (seated in a chair at the left end of the front row), A Company commanding officer Major George Stacey (seated on a cushion in the front row, third from the right), Assistant Adjutant Lieutenant Warren A. Andrews (standing in the back row, second from the left), and D Company commanding officer Captain Douglas Erskine Gerrard (standing in the back row, fourth from the left).

The reverse has the following caption handwritten in pencil: "Wes Murray on bike with suit on / Wes Murray was son of Norman Murray, Elgin Street. A conductor on NYC with Grandfather Cosens. Wes Murray was a brother of Mrs. Len (Phyllis) Barnes. He went first to Detroit then to New York, made a lot of money - lost in crash but came back. Died about 1978."

History / Biographical
Ian Donald Cameron was born on July 1, 1898, in St. Thomas, Ontario. He served in the First World War with the Mechanical Transport Division, and later with the Royal Flying Corps. During his service, he was shot down and taken prisoner at the Holzminder camp in Germany, where he was held captive for one year. After returning to St. Thomas, he worked as clerk at Nobility Chocolates and was later appointed as Elgin County court clerk, Registrar of the Surrogate Court, and local Registrar of the Ontario Supreme Court. In 1936, he became Sheriff of the County of Elgin, until he retired in 1963. He also served in the Second World War in the Elgin Regiment reserve battalion. Cameron married Vera Blackburn and they had two children, Kenneth L. Cameron and Marilyn Raven. Locally, he was known for his knowledge of local history and curated a private collection of photographs, books and ephemera documenting Elgin County's history. Cameron died in 1973 and is buried at Elmdale Memorial Park Cemetery.
