The Soldiers' Aid Commission was established by the Province of Ontario through Order-in-Council in 1915 to provide emergency financial assistance to Ontario veterans and/or dependents of the First World War. The Soldiers' Aid Commission Act of 1916 subsequently established a series of local boards under the administration of the Department of the Attorney General to review applications and disburse funds. The County of Elgin administered one of these local boards.
Scope and Content
Fonds consists of alphabetical registers listing the name, rank, address, place of enlistment, battalion, areas of service, wounds and date of return to Canada. These registers were compiled for the purposes of determining eligibility for assistance for returning soldiers from the First World War. Details of amounts received or particulars of individual applications are not included in these registers. Residents of both the County of Elgin and the City of St. Thomas are listed. An alphabetical index exists at the front of each register.
Blanket access restricted under the terms of the Access to Information and Protection of Privacy Act. Requests for access to specific individuals will be reviewed on a case by case basis. Access will be permitted to individuals deceased more than 30 years.
