91st Battalion marching east on Talbot Street, St. Thomas, June 25, 1916. View is looking northwest from White Street. Businesses visible on the north side of Talbot Street include R.H. and J. Dowler Ltd., clothiers, 489-491; R.H. Beattie, baker and confectioner, 515-517 (at street level in three-storey building with date stone reading "Central Block 1882"); P.R. Williams & Son, undertakers, 519; the Princess Theatre, 525; Porter & Nelson, jewelers, 527; Sandham & Roberts, electrical contractors, 531, "Everything Electrical" sign; William Barrett, barber, 533; Ranson A. Robins, cigars and billiards, 535. The Columbia Hotel on the northwest corner of Talbot and Mondamin Streets, 537-539, is just out of view to the right.
A small Japanese imperial flag is visible in a seond floor window above the Princess Theatre. It appears to be the ensign of the Imperial Japanese Navy and the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force which was in use from 1889-1945 (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Japanese_flags)

History / Biographical
Joseph Henry Welch (Regimental Number 189736) attested in the 91st Battalion at St Thomas on the December 25, 1915. He was a machinist's helper and listed his mother Isabel Welch as his next of kin. He sailed from Halifax on the SS Olympic on the June 18, 1916. On September 6, 1916, he was admitted to hospital with the mumps. His records show him wounded in the abdomen on May 4, 1917. He was discharged from hospital on June 29, 1917. He was "Discharged from His Majesty's Service on Demobilization" on the January 22, 1919 in London Ontario. His pay record shows that he sent $15 a month home to Isabel Welch.
Scope and Content
Correspondence (two pages) written by Corporal Joe Welch to his friend "Johnnie", dated December 12, 1917. The letter is handwritten on YMCA letterhead. Transcription:

Dec 12th 1917
Dear Friend Johnnie:
I received a parcel from use [sic] boys and girls of the Dutton Public School and think it very nice of the school and to think that they have not forgot thare [sic] boys that is away fighting for them. I am well and hope this letter finds you all the same. I am having a pretty good time over hear [sic]. I am going on pass for Christmas up to Stockport Eng. I spent my last Christmas in the trenches. I was in France ten months and got wounded, so believe me I will put a good time in this Christmas. I suppose Johnnie that Dutton is about the same. I wish I was back there again. Well John, thare [sic] has been a few of the Dutton boys got killed that will never see Dutton again. I was on draft to go back to France but was taken off it again. I hope I will see the day when I will see Dutton again. I have not much to tell you this time so I will close hoping you all a Merry Christmas. Goodbye.

Soldiers being recruited for the 91st Battalion, ca. 1916. At the St. Thomas YMCA. The Centre Street Baptist Church steeple is partially visible in the background. The signs on the doors read: "Join the Elgin Battalion' - with Battalion in some type of short form. The others say: "Pioneers Wanted" and "Recruits wanted" in the other building. The recruting office was described as being at 558 Talbot Street, in the 1916 City Directory. Located on the south side of Talbot Street, between White and Princess (Zone 12).
