Joseph Henry Welch (Regimental Number 189736) attested in the 91st Battalion at St Thomas on the December 25, 1915. He was a machinist's helper and listed his mother Isabel Welch as his next of kin. He sailed from Halifax on the SS Olympic on the June 18, 1916. On September 6, 1916, he was admitted to hospital with the mumps. His records show him wounded in the abdomen on May 4, 1917. He was discharged from hospital on June 29, 1917. He was "Discharged from His Majesty's Service on Demobilization" on the January 22, 1919 in London Ontario. His pay record shows that he sent $15 a month home to Isabel Welch.
Scope and Content
Correspondence (two pages) written by Corporal Joe Welch to his friend "Johnnie", dated December 12, 1917. The letter is handwritten on YMCA letterhead. Transcription:

Dear Friend Johnnie:
I received a parcel from use [sic] boys and girls of the Dutton Public School and think it very nice of the school and to think that they have not forgot thare [sic] boys that is away fighting for them. I am well and hope this letter finds you all the same. I am having a pretty good time over hear [sic]. I am going on pass for Christmas up to Stockport Eng. I spent my last Christmas in the trenches. I was in France ten months and got wounded, so believe me I will put a good time in this Christmas. I suppose Johnnie that Dutton is about the same. I wish I was back there again. Well John, thare [sic] has been a few of the Dutton boys got killed that will never see Dutton again. I was on draft to go back to France but was taken off it again. I hope I will see the day when I will see Dutton again. I have not much to tell you this time so I will close hoping you all a Merry Christmas. Goodbye.

Black and white photograph of First World War Soldier WIlfred Ernest Nelson (Regt. Number 3131443), included in the Eden Women's Institute Tweedsmuir History, Vol. 2, page 125. Nelson was born on March 15th, 1894* in Cottam, Ontario. He was drafted into the CEF in January, 1918 and served with the Canadian Infantry 31st Battalion in France and England. He was wounded in the Battle of Amiens in August, 1918, and returned home in April, 1919.
*N.B. The biography of Nelson included on page 125 gives his birth year as 1897, but his Attestation Papers give it as 1894.

James Alfred Reynolds, Jr. was born in London, England on June 13, 1891. His address on his Attestation Form is listed as "16 Horton Street, St. Thomas", but this is crossed out in ink and replaced with "Box 520, Waterford, Ontario". In subsequent documents, his wife's address is listed as 14 College Street, St. Thomas. His occupation before the war was as a repairman for railway cars. During the war, he served in the 1st Construction Battalion. In 1917, the designation of his unit changed to 1st Battalion, Canadian Railway Troops.
