Description
Black and white photograph of a flag reading "Steen's Cigar Store." The flag itself seems to mimic the Canadian flag, with two dark stripes or vertical rectangles to at the left and right sides of the flag. In its center are three tobacco leaves which contain the store's name, so that if hung vertically from the right side read (from top to bottom) "Steen's Cigar Store." The flag is displayed on a pole hanging from the side of a brick building. Also included in the frame is a clipping from a newspaper, labelled Tues. June 23, 1964. It reads as follows: "Tobacco Belt Flag. - Free Press St. Thomas Bureau. Aylmer cigar store owner Irving Steen has come up with a takeoff on Canada's proposed new flag. Mr. Steen, navy veteran of the Second World War, has replaced the proposed three mapleleaves with three golden, tobacco leaves. His idea for a flag has attracted considerable attention from persons passing his tobacco store and some favorable comments from tobacco farmers." Displayed in wooden frame painted white and light brown and overlaid with glass. Brown striped paper backing with a newspaper copy of the photograph adhered to it, labelled with the date again.
