History / Biographical
The Michigan Central Railroad (reporting mark MC) was originally incorporated in 1846 to establish rail service between Detroit, Michigan and St. Joseph, Michigan. The railroad later operated in the states of Michigan, Indiana, and Illinois in the United States, and the province of Ontario in Canada. After about 1867 the railroad was controlled by the New York Central Railroad, which later became part of Penn Central and then Conrail. Physical Description
1 photograph : b&w
Scope and Content
Black and white photograph showing staff of the Canada Southern Railway at the CSR's St. Thomas Station, ca. 1880. They are posed on the platform on the south side of the station. The bearded man at centre whose pant leg is marked with an x is identified as John Townsend, baggage master at the St. Thomas Station for the CSR and later the Michigan Central Railway. Note the sign posted above the entrance to the platform indicating that St. Thomas was the mid-point on the CSR route linking Detroit (112 miles to the west) and Clifton (115 miles to the east). Clifton was the original name of Niagara Falls, incorporated in 1856 and renamed Niagara Falls in 1881. Note also the hanging sign reading "Montreal Telegraph Co. Up Stairs". The photograph includes 22 men and one woman (probably a cleaner as she is holding a broom and standing beside a wash bucket).

Custodial History
The station was built by the Canada Southern Railway in 1871-1873 and served as both a passenger station and as the company's corporate headquarters. Throughout the years, many railway companies operated in the building including the New York Central Railroad, the Michigan Central Railroad, the Penn Central Transportation Company, Conrail, Amtrak, the Canadian Pacific Railway and the Canadian National Railways. Passenger traffic through the station ceased in 1979, and the station was officially closed in 1980. In 2005, the building was purchased by the North America Railway Hall of Fame, who carried out a campaign to restore the building. As of 2017, it remains the home of the North American Railway Hall of Fame and is available as an event space.
