Scope and Content
Seven black and white photographs used in St. Thomas Times-Journal article published August 24, 1968 with captions:
" Wheat 'cradles' may be museum pieces today but many Ontario farmers will still remember seeing these old relics in use. Starting into a big field of wheat with a 'Cradle' was an ominous task and meant days, not hours, of hard work to cut the crop. In 1912, when this picture was taken, with no combines and few grain binders available, Ontario farmers grew 855,000 acres of wheat - more than twice as much as we now grow in the province. Photograph by the late R.R. Sallows, Goderich, Ontario." (1a)
" Soap in years gone by wasn't on grocery shelves - instead, housewives had to depend on recipes handed down by their mothers and grandmothers. Experience and hard work assured a good quality year's supply of soap for the family. Photo by the late R.R. Sallows, Goderich, Ontario." (1b)
" Baking bread in the clean cool outdoor air was a regular chore for the farm wife around the turn of the century in Ontario. Today's farm housewife uses all the modern conveniences found in the urban home. Photo by the late R.R. Sallows, Goderich, Ontario." (1c)
" There have been a lot of changes in the fruit industry in the last 50 years but the hand picking method of peach harvest isn't one of them. Fruit and Vegetable Specialists with the Ontario Department of Agriculture and Food say that more than 1 1/2 million bushels were picked last year with a farm value of over six million dollars. Photograph (1911) by the late R.R. Sallows, Goderich, Ontario." (1d)
" Cutting logs or firewood with a crosscut saw is remembered only by our hardy pioneer farmers and woodsmen. The work done by these three men is now more quickly and easily done by one man with a chainsaw. Photo by the late R. R. Sallows, Goderich." (1e)
" Bean harvesting in days gone by was a longer, more difficult operation than it is today. About 855,000 acres of this high value crop were harvested in Ontario last year. Timely harvesting, usually about mid-September, results in good quality beans. Modern machinery is available today to complete the harvest efficiently without damage to the seed coat or loss due to weathering. Photo taken by the late R.R. Sallows, Goderich, Ontario." (1f)
" Here is one Turkey which will be important at Thanksgiving dinner. The little girl, however, won't watch while Mr. Gobbler is beheaded. Photo taken by the late R.R. Sallows, Goderich, Ontario - reproduced by Ontario Department of Agriculture and Food." (1g)

The band also claimed a third-place cash prize at the tough City of Edinburgh Games, where they played against four former world champion pipe bands. The St. Thomas band is the first Canadian band to ever take any prizes away from the Scots and was the only one of four North American bands entered in the recent competitions to come home with prizes. The band hopes to travel to the games again in two years, "after we've saved enough money," said Mr. Tuck."

"Zebedee Silent - Calvin Axford and his grandmother, Mrs. Clayton Axford of RR 5, St. Thomas, seemingly a little nervous, pet "Zebedee", a full-size stuffed African zebra. The animal, since its unfortunate demise during transit two hundred miles north of Toronto, has been under the preservative care of Calvin's grandfather, an amateur taxidermist. Mr. Axford has a museum housing more than fifty animals, one hundred fish, and two hundred birds. At the present time he is looking for a lion to round out his collection." (2a)
"Still Defiant - Although now a fixture rather than a hunter, "Lobo", a full grown timber wolf, still bares his fangs in defiance. Two bears, a couple of deer, an adult cow, moose, and many lesser animals make up a collection that has taken years to construct - or re-construct as the case may be. Mr. Axford is shown with Lobo, who along with the rest of the collection occupies a shed on the Axford property. Admission to the museum is free." (2b)

Scope and Content
Five black and white photographs used in St. Thomas Times-Journal article published June 27, 1981 with captions:
" This would be a typical homestead our imaginary pioneer family would encounter on their trip from Long Point at the Kettle Creek Settlement in the early 1800s. The apparatus in the background of the pioneer cabin was used for removing stumps from fields, which was extremely important when the area was first being settled and the forests cleaned. The long pole lying along the right hand arm of the puller was pushed by men on horses or oxen and turned the large screw which moved up and pulled out the stump. The account of our pioneer family, by the way, is based on fact." (2a)
" Wool was considered the best fabric with which to make clothes by early pioneers. When the woollen thread was spun it would be put on a large loom such as this and woven into cloth. It was a tedious process shared by various family members. The loom could be taken apart and stored when not in use. By the 1860s, woollen mills were in operation in many communities but their services were expensive and many women would take the raw wool to the mill to be carded and then bring it home for spinning and weaving." (2b)
" Rugs for pioneer homes were made in various ways from rags or by hooking, which this woman is doing. Crafts such as this would occupy much of the pioneer woman's time during the winter months when outside work was limited." (2c)
" Pioneer women spent many hours spinning the rough, already carded wool, seen at lower right, into wool thread that would be wound on to a spool. A horseshoe-shaped device on the wheel turns the thread as it is wound on to the spool and this gives it a twist which gives the fibre added strength. Wool was then dyed simple colors and woven into cloth." (2d)
" Kettle Creek area settlers were practical in just about everything they did, from the sports they participated in - which also put meat on the table - to the animals they bought to share the work in the fields. Oxen were used by early settlers instead of horses because they were more easily cared for and suited to the tough job. Farmers gave the purchase of a pair a high priority." (2e)
