History / Biographical
The Michigan Central Railroad (reporting mark MC) was originally incorporated in 1846 to establish rail service between Detroit, Michigan and St. Joseph, Michigan. The railroad later operated in the states of Michigan, Indiana, and Illinois in the United States, and the province of Ontario in Canada. After about 1867 the railroad was controlled by the New York Central Railroad, which later became part of Penn Central and then Conrail. After the 1998 Conrail breakup Norfolk Southern now owns much of the former Michigan Central trackage.

Scope and Content
Black and white photograph used in St. Thomas Times-Journal article published July 25, 1956 with caption: " County Engineer Fred Bell said today the new $70,000 Fingal road bridge under construction to replace the 57-year-old single-lane structure that has served traffic westbound from the city since 1899, will be completed in two to three months. The old bridge had become a bottleneck to modern day traffic moving from St. Thomas under the New York Central's massive bridge over Kettle Creek Valley, and was in a state of deterioration. Now it is being replaced by a three-lane concrete and steel structure. Angled apporaches will be eliminated and the new roadway will permit traffic to flow under the N.Y.C. overpass arch and straight up the Fingal hill. Footings and the centre pier have been completed by the Elgin Construction Co. The above photo is a bird's view taken by a Times-Journal cameraman from the top of the N.Y.C. bridge looking toward No. 4 Highway and Spohn's flats. The old bridge is being used to permit traffic to cross Kettle Creek until the new structure is opened."

Custodial History
The station was built by the Canada Southern Railway in 1871-1873 and served as both a passenger station and as the company's corporate headquarters. Throughout the years, many railway companies operated in the building including the New York Central Railroad, the Michigan Central Railroad, the Penn Central Transportation Company, Conrail, Amtrak, the Canadian Pacific Railway and the Canadian National Railways. Passenger traffic through the station ceased in 1979, and the station was officially closed in 1980. In 2005, the building was purchased by the North America Railway Hall of Fame, who carried out a campaign to restore the building. As of 2017, it remains the home of the North American Railway Hall of Fame and is available as an event space.
