Scope and Content
Incline railway powerhouse and observation tower, Port Stanley, ca. 1880. William Fraser built the incline railway in the 1870s to allow guests at the Fraser House hotel on Fraser Heights to conveniently travel to and from the main beach. The observation tower was built adjacent to the incline railway as an attraction for visitors. The incline railway was originally powered by a steam locomotive. It was purchased by the London and Port Stanley Railway and electrified in 1915. The incline railway ceased operating ca. 1963 when its open cars were deemed unsafe and the owners decided it was not cost effective to convert to closed cars. File includes:

Scope and Content
Drawing depicting the incline railway and observation tower, Port Stanley, looking east, ca. View also includes the pedestrian walkway along the cliff top on Fraser Heights in front of the Fraser House hotel, Port Stanley main beach (at this time completely undeveloped), an early version of the west pier and lighthouse, and a schooner entering the harbour. The train was the new rail liner, termed a 'railway automobile', and it was making its initial trip from London to Toronto. Mrs. Feindel was its first woman passenger. Presenting the flowers is Douglas V. Gonder, of Toronto, vice-president of the CNR." (C8 Sh3 B1 F2 6a)
"At The Ready - During a ceremony inaugurating a new rail liner service from London to Toronto Wednesday, these two young women employees of the Canadian National Railways held a company flag just prior to the train's break-through. "Restoration - Work is done on the exterior of [London and Port Stanley Railway] trailer car number 3 at the Halton County Radial Railway Museum. It takes countless hours of volunteer labour to put the old railway cars back in first-class condition." (C8 Sh3 B1 F2 10a)
"Like New - The interior of [London and Port Stanley Railway] motor car number 8 has been restored to excellent condition. The motor car, which the L. & P.S. operated until the end of passenger service in 1957, is the only L. & P.S. car still running." (C8 Sh3 B1 F2 10b)
"Much Work To Do - The interior of this L. & P.S. car shows the ravages of time and years of no use. A major task faced the members of the Halton County Radial Railway Museum in fixing this car up." (C8 Sh3 B1 F2 10c)

Here a few of them are seen streaming aboard the train at London. After tomorrow, the excursion would not have been possible unless they had been content to come only as far as St. Thomas, as the service between St. Thomas and Port Stanley terminates on Friday. History / Biographical
The London and Port Stanley Railway Company (L&PSR) was incorporated by a group of prominent London, Ontario citizens in May 1853. It commenced operations in September 1856. Initially, the railway line proved successful as it generated enough business in Port Stanley, Ontario to result in the construction of a port and other facilities that were regularly visited by American shipping lines. During the summer, the L&PSR became a popular route for city dwellers looking to escape from the heat to the beaches of Lake Erie. Passenger traffic plummeted following the Second World War after reaching a peak of 1.1 million in 1943. The end of gas rationing and more use of the automobile caused the end of passenger service on February 1, 1957. Effective January 1, 1966, the line became part of the Canadian National Railways (CNR). The City of London had traded the line to CNR in exchange for property elsewhere in the municipality.
