Scope and Content
Black and white photograph used in St. Thomas Times-Journal article published March 24, 1980 with caption: "Old recreation centre coming down - The old recreation centre standing on the St. Thomas Psychiatric Hospital property is being demolished. The building is one of the remnants of the Second World War air force training station and was used by the air force as a drill hall. After the war, this building, along with others on the property, was turned over to the hospital which used it for all sorts of recreational activities. Different community groups also met there over the years. The psychiatric hospital was eventually renovated to provide a recreational facility as its centre core, and this well-known building went out of use. Because of its deteriorated condition and its potential as a fire hazard, the ministry of government services has decided to have it demolished. In this photo, Ben Stolk, one of the workers, and John Coleman, the recreation supervisor at the hospital, start with the dismantling of the interior. Any wood or other items that can be salvaged will be sold at the site."

Three black and white photographs used in St. Thomas Times-Journal article published April 28, 1962 with captions: "That New Spring Bonnet - Whether one is in hospital or able to participate in numerous activities, with the spring season there is an urge for new clothes, and at the Ontario Hospital, the Peacock Room offers all types of raiment for those desiring it. Here, Mrs. Erik Engelbert, one of the afternoon volunteers, holds a mirror while a spring hat is adjusted to the patient's liking" (C8 Sh5 B1 F26 19a); "Time For Tea - Two years ago, Mrs. J.G. Sauder heard of the dearth of White Cross volunteer afternoon workers at the Ontario Hospital, and decided to do something about it. Since then, she has been a regular weekly visitor, doing all she can to make the long hours in hospital pass more quickly for those receiving care. Tea time is a special event during her visits, and here she serves the patients who enjoy the personal contacts her visits afford" (C8 Sh5 B1 F26 19b); " As One Woman to Another - For the past five years, Mrs. Clare Vaughan has been at the Ontario Hospital one afternoon a week, and during the many hours she has spent there, her most important task has been 'just talking.' To those who are far from home and family, having an interested visitor to exchange ideas and comments with means much. Here she is shown, left, as she spends an hour with several of the women patients" (C8 Sh5 B1 F26 19c).

The grand parade heralded the opening of the event and taking part were these two unusually attired clowns who created much mirth with their antics" (C8 Sh5 B1 F26 21c); "Try Their Luck - Many games were available and many people tried their luck at fishing as shown above while others tried target shooting, throwing rings around blocks of wood, knocking down milk bottles and many more games. All of the patients were rewarded with prizes" (C8 Sh5 B1 F26 21d); "Get Ready for Big Barbecue - Wieners by the hundreds were placed on the large grill in the barbecue area for the patients and visitors to enjoy. The hotdogs were more than welcome to them after the long celebration on the hospital grounds" (C8 Sh5 B1 F26 21e); "Hotdogs for Everyone - At 4:30 all patients and visitors went to the barbecue area where everyone was treated with hotdogs and soft drinks. The photo above shows only a portion of the crowd waiting in line" (C8 Sh5 B1 F26 21f).
